Trails and Local History

Torrenieri lies along the Via Cassia, which once formed a road and railway junction there. Its location on the Via Francigena gave Torrenieri historical significance. The Via Francigena runs through the centre of Torrenieri and leads from there into the Parco della Valdorcia. Torrenieri is also the XIII station on Sigeric's itinerary. Your stay therefore brings together historic routes, local history and the transition into the surrounding landscape.

Art, Church and Living Tradition

The church of Santa Maria Maddalena houses the painted wooden sculpture Madonna col Bambino in trono by Domenico di Niccolò dei Cori, dated to the second or third decade of the 15th century. The church complex includes the 16th-century Oratorio della Compagnia di San Rocco. The Murales di Renzo Regoli is located on the retaining wall next to the stadium in Torrenieri, on the side facing Via Pascoli. Torrenieri also celebrates the traditional Festa Patronale di Santa Maria Maddalena. Here, sacred art, a historic church complex, a mural and a local patronal festival come together in different forms.

Railway Station and Historic Railway Line

Torrenieri railway station opened on 14 May 1865 as the terminus of the Asciano–Torrenieri railway line. Historic Treno Natura trains return to Torrenieri station along the Asciano–Monte Antico line, which is closed to regular traffic. The station thus connects a precisely dated chapter of railway history with the return of historic trains on a disused section of line.

Cycling Route and Motorhome Stopover

In the vicinity of Torrenieri, about 3 km away towards San Quirico along the old route of the Via Cassia, you can reach the Eroica cycling route via the turn-off for Cosona and the brown Eroica signposts. Torrenieri has a large, equipped motorhome stopover area in the station car park. The station car park on Via Bindo Crocchi has a toilet, washing and disposal facility, a drinking-water fountain and a fountain with non-potable water for washing. The illuminated, paved area is also suitable for overnight stays.

When choosing accommodation in Torrenieri, you can focus on culture, historic routes, cycling or the area around the railway station. This allows you to plan your stay according to your preferred reason for travelling: you can place local history and art at the centre of your visit, or give greater weight to routes and the station surroundings. A hotel in Torrenieri is therefore an obvious search option especially if you want to include the town itself and its documented connections with historic routes in your travel plans.

Other destinations for your travel planning include Sant'angelo In Colle, Lama and Castelnuovo Dell'abate.
