Montalcino combines impressive fortress architecture, sacred art and several centuries of local history. If you are planning a culturally focused trip, you will find different historical layers here: from the former city walls and the Fortezza di Montalcino to an early 16th-century fresco and archaeological traces dating from prehistoric times and the Etruscan period.
The Fortezza and Historic Urban Spaces
The Fortezza di Montalcino is an approximately pentagonal fortress with a tower at each corner. It was built from 1361 onwards by the Sienese, partly reusing the former city walls dating from the 13th century. Porta Burelli is a historic entrance with two gate leaves. Traces of a portcullis are still preserved there.
The Palazzo Comunale Storico (Palazzo dei Priori) dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. The building houses the town's Info Point.
Sacred Art and Local History
The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie contains a fresco of the Madonna and Child among angels and saints. It was created by an unknown Sienese painter at the beginning of the 16th century.
The Museo Civico e Diocesano d'Arte Sacra di Montalcino is housed in the former 13th-century Sant'Agostino monastery. The underground archaeological section traces the history of the area from prehistoric times to the Etruscan period.
Places and Landscapes in the Surrounding Area
Several destinations are located around Montalcino: Castello Banfi and the Abbazia di Sant'Antimo, as well as the Parrocchia Di S. Egidio Abate. Monte Cucco is also nearby. These should be distinguished from Poggio Napoleone, Poggio Cerrete and Monte Vecchio, which are located in the wider regional area around Montalcino. This spatial distinction is helpful when planning excursions, as it differentiates between destinations in the surrounding area and those in the wider regional area.
