Monticchiello – Fortress Walls, Teatro Povero and Tuscan Cuisine

Monticchiello is a destination for visitors who want to combine medieval architecture, community theatre and Tuscan cuisine. Its character as a medieval fortress is evident in the town walls and the Cassero Tower, which belonged to the former defensive system of the Republic of Siena. The medieval ring wall of Monticchiello is interrupted by eight towers. The entrance gate to the fortifications is a pointed-arch gateway flanked by two smaller towers. In this compact historic setting, you will encounter several characteristic elements of the town’s fortifications.

The Church of Saints Leonardo and Cristoforo plays a special role. It was built in the 13th century by Cistercian craftsmen on behalf of the Republic of Siena and is an example of Gothic-Cistercian architecture. If you pay attention to the portals and finely crafted details, you will find a Gothic portal with delicate columns and an ornately designed rose window. Teatro Povero: Theatre Rooted in the Community

The autodramatic theatre project Teatro Povero is closely connected with the residents of Monticchiello: since its creation in 1967, they have been directly involved in writing, set construction and the performance of the productions. The residents’ involvement includes writing, construction and performance, not merely acting on stage. The annual cycle in the square focuses on pressing contemporary issues and makes the theatre a permanent part of the town’s cultural character.

Routes and Orientation on Site

The “Pienza–Monticchiello–Pienza” route follows the walls along a recently secured path around Monticchiello and provides access from above. The route name also indicates the return to Pienza as the starting point of the trail. The only direct entrance is through the Gothic arch of the Porta Sant’Agata. For your planning, it is also important to know that the parking areas for Monticchiello are located outside the medieval walls. When choosing your hotel, its location in relation to this historic ring of walls can therefore be a useful point of orientation.

Tuscan Cuisine in the Historic Centre

In the historic centre, Ristorante Bronzino welcomes guests at the historic venue of Teatro Povero. The venue is an old 18th-century granary; typical Tuscan cuisine made with local ingredients is served. The new production facility of Mulino Val d’Orcia is also located in the immediate vicinity of Monticchiello.
