Art and History at the Piccolo Museo

The Piccolo Museo di Fighille houses a permanent collection of modern art associated with the national FighilleArte painting competition. Since 2001, the museum has included more than 250 works of figurative art, predominantly paintings. The collection represents more than 140 artists from all over Italy. Those who explore Fighille through art can connect the paintings in the museum with the building’s former function.

From the Middle Ages until the unification of Italy, the building of the Piccolo Museo di Fighille was the seat of the Papal customs office. The building’s former use predates the FighilleArte competition, which has been held every year since 1979.

FighilleArte and Life in the Village

The FighilleArte competition has been held every year since 1979 on the first weekend of October on the occasion of the village’s patron saint festival. For scheduling purposes, the first weekend of October is the fixed reference point; the patron saint festival identifies the occasion in the local calendar.

FighilleArte has separate categories for studio works that have already been completed and for extemporaneous works created on site. Extemporaneous works are created directly on site, while studio works have already been completed. During the FighilleArte weekend, visitors can watch artists at work in the village streets. The exhibition of all competition works can also be visited at the local school.

Churches and Religious Art

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Petriolo was consecrated on August 28, 1913, according to a design by the architect Pilade Ghiandai.

The Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Fighille houses the 15 original works of the Stations of the Cross from Fighille to the Santuario di Petriolo. For those interested in culture, San Michele Arcangelo can be planned as a separate item on the itinerary for religious art.
