Castello di Pesciano and sacred traces

Castello di Pesciano was rebuilt and fortified in 1421. Its sturdy walls have remained intact to this day and give the building a visibly historic character. Cappella di Sant’Anna is located at Castello di Pesciano. It contains an altar stone considered to be very old. The sacred surroundings also include a small chapel dedicated to Sin Liberatore, which protects a graceful 15th-century Maestà. This combination of fortification, chapels and religious art makes the Castello a particularly multifaceted point of reference for exploring Pesciano.

Historical evidence can also be found outside the Castello. The historic parish of San Lorenzo in Pesciano is documented for the years 1687 to 1860. To the right of the road from Todi, in the woods, are the remains of the old Romanesque oratory of San Giovanni de Scoplellis, which may date from the 10th century. The differing chronological classifications in particular – from the possible origins of the oratory in the Early Middle Ages to the documented history of the parish – show how broad the historical traces around Pesciano are.

Via Amerina and Ponte di Pesciano

A Via Amerina stage from Todi to Castel dell’Aquila initially follows the Arnata River and later crosses it at the Roman Ponte di Pesciano. The bridge is one of the surviving road-building structures that were required in the Arnata Valley to cross the most important watercourse along the Via Amerina. It is attributed to the Early Middle Ages. In addition, Ponte di Pesciano is part of the “Circuiti del paesaggio” hiking trail network, which runs through the municipal area. Historical routes, the river landscape and a surviving structure therefore come directly together at this location.

Festivals and local products

The San Liberatore festival is part of the local culture and is celebrated in Pesciano every year on 17 August. A tasting of typical products based on wild-growing herbs at the Il Merollo agriturismo in Pesciano provided a different focus in September 2023. Both examples reveal different sides of the place: religious festival tradition on the one hand, and regional produce and the use of wild-growing herbs on the other.

In January 2026, the “Presepe Vivente di Pesciano” was also held in Pesciano as a sacred walking performance through the streets of the district. Together with the San Liberatore festival, this performance broadens the cultural perspective on Pesciano to include events that connect sacred content with the public space of the district.
