Rasiglia: Water, Weaving and Medieval Village Character

Water shapes the medieval village

Rasiglia preserves the typical features of a medieval village and is arranged in an amphitheater-shaped structure. This character is particularly evident in the stone lanes: they follow the canals and cross them. Brooks and small waterfalls run through them, complemented by sluice gates. The Capovena spring also crosses Rasiglia in the form of brooks and small waterfalls before the water flows into the Menotre. This creates a townscape in which waterways, buildings and paths are directly interconnected.

Weaving and craftsmanship

The tradition of weaving, wool processing and dyeing associated with water dates back to the 13th century in Rasiglia. The archaeological-industrial textile park preserves the production chain from sheep shearing to the finished textile product. The restored Lanificio Accorimboni wool mill still houses its Jacquard loom on site. If you would like to experience culture not only through buildings but also through craft processes, this is one of the village’s particular highlights.

Historic buildings by the water

The Trinci family built the Castrum et Roccha Rasilia as a fortress on the hilltop. The Ponte Romano is a stone bridge from the 3rd century BC and crosses the Menotre River. The Mulino ad acqua della Rocchetta water mill dates from the 18th century; its ancient millstones and former grain-processing equipment are still visible. The Museo delle Acque is located in the former Church of San Salvatore and displays an extensive collection of historic objects and equipment used to manage waterways in the Umbrian area. Here, you encounter military architecture, bridge building, grain processing and water management in various historical forms.

Exploring Rasiglia on foot

If you would like to explore Rasiglia on foot, the Menotre Trail follows the course of the river and offers views of the surrounding nature as well as the village’s attractions. The official Itinerario Pale Rasiglia route is available as a GPX file, covers 10 km and has an elevation gain of 250 metres. The excursion is considered a full-day walking tour and begins in the centre of Rasiglia on the SS 319 Sellanese state road. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation, you can use the village centre as a planning reference if this excursion is part of your daily itinerary.

Events at different times of the year

Penelope a Rasiglia takes place every year in June and is dedicated to the historic crafts of weaving. The Rasiglia Paese presepe event takes place on 26 December and 6 January. This allows you to choose your travel dates according to the cultural occasion and experience Rasiglia either in the spirit of the weaving crafts or on one of the two event dates.
