Grotti: Castle Ruins, Church Festivals and a Rocky Landscape

Grotti Between Castle and Church

Grotti combines a structured settlement with medieval remains and a distinctive rocky landscape. Above the present-day settlement are the remains of a medieval castle. These are dominated by the La Torre fortification. Those who wish to explore Grotti through its architectural history will encounter a place where the settlement and former fortification are closely connected, without the individual elements losing their own significance.

The Chiesa di San Pietro and Its Events

The Chiesa di San Pietro dates back to the 14th century. It was built as a devotional chapel outside the castle walls, beside the public road. The church is therefore an independent part of the area's history and, at the same time, a venue for recurring events. Every year in June, an organ concert is held here, organised by the Ente Rocca di Spoleto.

The religious festivals, too, follow fixed dates in the calendar. At the Chiesa di San Pietro, the Feast of Sant’Antonio Abate is celebrated on a Sunday after 17 January. The Feast of San Pietro Apostolo takes place there on 29 June.

Four Settlement Centres on the Road to Spoleto

Grotti lies above and below the road to Spoleto and is divided into four interconnected settlement centres: Castello, Monteverde, San Pietro and Burghittacciu. This structure is one of the most important points of reference when exploring the area. When exploring Grotti, its history and its churches, it is worth keeping the four names in mind as different parts of the same interconnected settlement.

Caves, Gorges and Mountains in the Surrounding Area

Grotti's local landscape is characterised by caves, rocky gorges and rock peaks. The surrounding area is also home to Monte Cannaiola, Monte Coscerno, Monte Galloro and Monte Felcito, each of them a mountain. As a result, alongside the area's architectural traces, clearly defined landscape features also take centre stage. Nature enthusiasts can therefore explore Grotti through its geological formations and the surrounding mountains, while culturally interested travellers can focus on the castle ruins and church.

Palace and Museums Around Grotti

Racani Arroni Palace, a palace, is located in the vicinity of Grotti. Also nearby are Galleria D'Arte 1631 Antiquariato D'Alta Epoca, a museum, and Palazzo Comunale e Pinacoteca, also a museum. In addition, there is Town Hall and Picture Gallery, another museum. The different names and classifications offer several cultural points of reference: a palace and several museums complement the castle and church themes directly associated with Grotti.

A Tradition Concerning the Campana della Madonna delle Scentelle

According to tradition, a woman threw her gold into the molten metal intended for the Campana della Madonna delle Scentelle in Grotti, a bell for the small rural church, as thanks for a favour received. This story is part of the religious and local references that continue to live on in the image of Grotti alongside the church festivals and the history of the Chiesa di San Pietro.
