Citerna amid medieval architecture and sweeping views over the upper Tiber Valley

Citerna is characterised by well-preserved medieval architecture. The streets leading up to the hill of Citerna offer panoramic views over the Umbrian and Tuscan upper Tiber Valley. From the panoramic terrace in Piazza Scipioni, the view extends across the entire upper Tiber Valley. The climb up the hill and the terrace combine movement through the streets with expansive views over the valley.

Churches and art in the town centre

In the historic centre stands the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, dedicated to the town's patron saint. It houses a large panel painting of the Crucifixion, painted by Niccolò Pomarancio in 1570, and a terracotta figure of the Madonna and Child from the school of Giovanni della Robbia.

The Church of San Francesco stands on Corso Garibaldi. It was built together with the adjoining Franciscan monastery of Santa Elisabetta in the second half of the 15th century on the foundations of an earlier building.

The medieval chemin de ronde runs along the walls. Its fully preserved round-arched openings form a series of loggias.

The Museo Bruno Bartoccini museum space is dedicated to the sculptor Bruno Bartoccini. He was born in Pistrino in 1910.

For pilgrims, Citerna is the destination of the third stage of the Way of St Francis from Sansepolcro and, at the same time, the starting point of the stage to Città di Castello.
