Matigge: Towers, Churches, Olive Oil and Trails

Matigge brings together historical traces, sacred art, olive oil and trails in a diverse range of experiences. The main highlights are Torre Matigge, the Chiese di San Donato and San Nicolò, Il Frantoio and the trails of “Trevi 4 passi”. This allows you to plan your trip around culture, regional flavors or physical activity.

Historical Traces along the Flaminia

Torre Matigge was built by the municipality of Trevi at the end of the 14th century. Its earlier function was military in nature: the tower served as a defensive structure against armed bands traveling along the Flaminia. It therefore represents a period in history when routes were used not only for exchange, but also to protect places and people.

The Chiesa di San Donato is located above a mountainous branch of the ancient Via Flaminia. At the same time, it lies on the right hydrological side of a watercourse identified cartographically as Fosso di Paterno. This watercourse once formed the boundary of the historic Balìa of Matigge. The Chiesa di San Nicolò adds to the cultural picture with frescoes in its semicircular apse, attributed to Mezastri.

Olive Oil and Agricultural Heritage

Free tastings are offered at Società Agricola Trevi “Il Frantoio” in the Matigge district. The program includes Olio Elite, Olio Famiglia and Olio Trevi D.O.P. Umbria Colli Assisi-Spoleto. There is also a permanent exhibition of agricultural equipment from the late 19th century. Here, olive oil and historic tools lead directly to two different aspects of the local character: the regional product and the rural past.

Trails with Different Profiles

The first trail of Itinerario 01 “Trevi 4 passi” begins in front of Torre Matigge and is considered suitable for the whole family and walkable year-round. A considerably longer route leads from Torre Matigge to Bovara. It is 12.5 kilometers long, involves approximately 540 meters of ascent and takes about five hours on foot.

The trails of “Trevi 4 passi” are currently not maintained. Some sections may be incomplete or not easily walkable. This limitation is just as relevant to planning as the different distances and elevation gains. A pull-off on the road about 250 meters uphill from Torre Matigge is designated as a parking area for the trail.
