Spoleto: Cultural History, Bridges and Mountain Landscape

Spoleto combines distinctive buildings, archaeological evidence and a landscape of mountains, bridges and former railway sections. This creates a destination with different focal points for you: you can explore cultural history at specific sites or understand the landscape connections between the bridge, mountain and former railway line.
Cultural History from Antiquity to the Middle Ages
The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta was rebuilt at the end of the 12th century. The Teatro Romano di Spoleto dates from the 1st century BC. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Spoleto contains artefacts from the Bronze Age through the Roman period. The three sites each highlight different aspects of history and are suitable for planning a trip that does not focus on just one era.
Rocca Albornoz and Casa Romana
At Rocca Albornoz, visitors can see the Courtyard of Honour, the Weapons Courtyard, the Hall of Honour and the Camera Pinta. Casa Romana offers a one-hour guided tour entitled “Dentro la Domus: un viaggio nel tempo”. Casa Romana can also be reached from the paid Posterna car park via a free mechanised route with an exit at Piazza del Mercato. Bridges, Mountains and Former Railway Lines
Ponte delle Torri is an imposing bridge made of local limestone, approximately 230 metres long and 80 metres high, connecting Colle Sant’Elia with Monteluco. The Giro dei Condotti and numerous other paths towards the mountains around Spoleto begin at Fortilizio dei Mulini. Monte della Croce, Monte Cormelano and Monte Fionchi are mountains in the area surrounding Spoleto. This combination appeals to travellers who want to experience not only buildings but also terrain, connections and paths as part of their stay in Italy.
The railway lines form part of Spoleto’s historical dimension. The Spoleto–Santa Anatolia di Narco section of the former railway line has the route’s greatest differences in elevation and the highest concentration of bridges, viaducts and tunnels. The former Spoleto–Norcia railway line has been almost completely renovated and secured so that it can be converted into a greenway for pedestrians and cyclists.

Three museums are located in the immediate surroundings of Spoleto: Street Art Spoleto, the Museo Diocesiano and the Galleria D'Arte 1631 Antiquariato D'Alta Epoca. Racani Arroni Palace is a palace there. Also in the immediate surroundings of Spoleto, the Arco di Druso e Germanico is a natural arch.
