The Ponte di Montecastelli and the history of the crossing

A historic ferry was located at the site of today’s Ponte di Montecastelli. For people from Città di Castello, it was one of the few significant crossing options; otherwise, they had hardly any opportunity to cross the river. The Ponte di Montecastelli also served pilgrims travelling to Rome through the upper Tiber Valley. It was built in an early period, possibly in the 8th or 9th century.

Chiesa di San Pietro

The Chiesa di San Pietro in Montecastelli was built between 1890 and 1897, probably on the remains of an older parish church. Its history as a parish church can be traced back to 1751; it continues to be administered as a parish church. At the entrance, beneath a pointed arch, there is a ceramic image. It depicts an angel freeing Saint Peter from his chains. The church thus combines its period of construction, its ecclesiastical function and a clearly defined visual motif.

Castle and regional history

The first known accounts of Monte Castelli Castle date from the beginning of the 11th century. Together with other fortified structures, the castle was part of the organisation of this regional area. Its early mention represents a distinct historical reference alongside the much later Chiesa di San Pietro.

The area around Montecastelli includes Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera and Palazzo dei Priori; both are considered palaces. It also includes the Museo del Duomo and the Museo Diocesano Di Citta' Di Castello; both are considered museums. The Monte Acuto, Poggio le Liane and Cima di Sant'Anna are also considered mountains there. Monte Tezio is located in the wider regional area and is likewise considered a mountain.

Stage 17 from Città di Castello to Montone

Stage 17 from Città di Castello to Montone follows the Tiber via Trestina to Montecastelli. It then leaves the valley floor and climbs to the Borgo Montone. The stage is officially signposted and partly follows CAI trails 126 and 136 as well as the cycle and footpath. It also bears the official signage for the Viae Sancti Romualdi. On Stage 17, Montecastelli is associated with a rest stop; there is also a bar and a grocery store there for orientation.
