Papiano: Castle, Churches and Three Districts

Papiano Between Route and Local History

Papiano combines historic religious buildings, fortifications and a clearly structured settlement with the Strada del Piano route. It leads from Perugia via San Martino in Campo and Papiano to Castello delle Forme and Marsciano. For your travel planning, the town therefore combines local history with a clear sequence of places.

Three Districts with Different Locations

Papiano is divided into Sudentro, the oldest district located on the hill; the Borgo below it, with the main services; and Papiano Stazione, situated further down in the valley. This spatial arrangement is relevant when choosing accommodation: you can consider the hilltop location, the Borgo or the valley settlement as different points of orientation for your stay. Papiano Stazione developed around the station of the Ferrovia Centrale Umbra.

Churches and Religious History

The Church of San Silvestro has been documented since 1027. The parish of San Michele Arcangelo already belonged de iure to the monastery of San Pietro in Perugia in 1163. If you are focusing on culture, you can consider religious history and the development of the town separately; both topics remain anchored in specific buildings and places.

Castle, Watchtowers and “Su Dentro”

The fortified castle of Papiano was built in 1277. Of the five original watchtowers, three are still preserved in good condition. The historic watchtower stands separately from the rest of the castle above the fortified village.

Locally, the castle is known as “Su Dentro” and is considered an open-air museum with alleyways, underground passages, circular walls, arches and still well-preserved frescoes. The historic watchtower was converted into a bell tower in 1823. The change from watchtower to bell tower also illustrates a later change of use within the complex.

Memorial Sites and Local Traditions

More recent history is also present at specific sites. Outside a small church, there are three bombs that failed to explode during the Second World War and were later defused. Since the bombing raid of April 30, 1944, Saint Catherine has been honored locally with great solemnity. The Papiano war memorial was created by the Perugian sculptor Alberto Moroni; it was inaugurated on Piazza della Vittoria on October 14, 1922. Together with the memorial and the religious commemoration, the historical focus therefore extends beyond the medieval fortification.

Another local tradition is associated with the Feast of San Giuseppe on March 19: in Papiano, the old tradition of launching balloons from the village square is being revived. Marsciano lies in the surrounding landscape between the Tiber and Nestore rivers.
