Petrignano: Castle, Fresco and Chiascio

Petrignano combines a stone castle with a round tower, the Chiascio River and historical performances. The medieval Castello, a fresco from 1502, performances in the lanes and along the riverbanks, as well as destinations in the surrounding area, offer different ways to experience Italian culture and landscape. Historical Motifs in the Castello

The Castello di Petrignano is a stone castle with a round tower. A fresco created in 1502 in the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto in the Castello depicts the enthroned Madonna with the Christ Child, surrounded by seraphim and Saints Sebastian and Roch. In the landscape background of the fresco, the Chiascio appears with curving boats.

Due to severe moisture damage, the fresco was transferred to the parish church of San Pietro in 1897. The change of location is part of the artwork’s history.

Performances Between the Lanes and the Riverbank

La Passione Vivente, which takes place every year on the evening of Palm Sunday, is associated with Petrignano. The Presepe vivente di Petrignano d’Assisi is a historical performance; a 44th edition is part of its history. Its presentation leads through the lanes of the medieval Castello di Petrignano and along the banks of the Chiascio River. In this way, a fixed time of year, historical staging and the townscape come together in a cultural experience.

Cultural Destinations in the Surrounding Area

Temple of Minerva is located in the surroundings of Petrignano, a sight regarded as an ancient site. In the immediate vicinity is the Monastero delle Benedettine di Sant'Anna, a monastery. The National Archaeological Museum of Perugia and the Casa Museo di Palazzo Sorbello are also located in the surrounding area; both are museums. The cultural range in the vicinity thus extends from an ancient site and a monastery to two museums.

Landscape and Activities on the Chiascio

The surroundings of Petrignano also include Monte delle Croci and Monte Subasio, each a mountain, as well as Arco dei Gigli, a natural arch. Giardini pubblici, a garden, is located nearby. The Petrignano Cross course is two kilometres long and is situated in a park on the banks of the Chiascio River in Petrignano di Assisi.

Getting There from Assisi

From Assisi, the Castello di Petrignano can be reached by bus routes E007 on the Assisi–Petrignano–Perugia route and E210 on the Assisi–Petrignano–S. Gregorio–Valfabbrica route. From Assisi’s Giovanni Paolo II car park, follow the road towards Perugia; then follow the signs for Aeroporto, Petrignano and Gubbio.
