Pietrafitta between Fossils, Art and the Lake
Fossils as a Key to the Landscape
Pietrafitta makes geological and industrial history visible at specific locations. The lignite deposits of Pietrafitta belong to the sedimentary sequence of the Tavernelle-Pietrafitta Basin. During the Pleistocene, this basin extended twelve kilometres from east to west, was up to five kilometres wide, and initially records a large lake followed by a river system. For your visit, this geological background offers a special perspective on the landscape: beneath the way the town is perceived today lies a development shaped by water, sediments and fossil evidence.
Due to the abundance of its fossils and their internationally recognised scientific value, the Pietrafitta paleontological site is one of Umbria’s most significant sites at regional level. Lignite mining in Pietrafitta brought thousands of fossil remains to light, including 40 vertebrate species. Around the old mining quarry, the visible orange-coloured machinery from the former mining operations characterises the Pietrafitta area as an open-air industrial museum.
Museum and Contemporary Art
The Paleontological Museum “Luigi Boldrini” in Pietrafitta houses the mural “Il Mondo Sottosopra” by Alice Pasquini. “Foresta Fossile”, a monumental installation by Pietro Ruffo, was also created for this museum. The combination of a scientific collection, fossil finds and large-scale art gives a museum visit a distinctive breadth of content.
The entrance to the Paleontological Museum “Luigi Boldrini” is also accessible to people with disabilities. This specific access point is particularly relevant to your planning if you pay attention to accessibility when visiting cultural sites.
Churches and Art in the Town
Madonna del Fosso was built outside the town walls in 1548 and converted into a chapel in 1925. It preserves a fresco depicting the Madonna between Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch, attributed to Tiberio d’Assisi. Thus, alongside palaeontology, Pietrafitta also offers religious art and a clearly dated architectural history.
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Pietrafitta dates from 1866 and was built in the Renaissance style. Its elevated façade forms a square that serves as a churchyard. Here, architecture and public space are directly part of the town’s character.
To Lago di Pietrafitta
You can reach Lago di Pietrafitta from the Paleontological Museum “Luigi Boldrini”. The lake lies at the foot of the town, near the modern thermal power plant. It is used for carp fishing and sporting activities; world carp-fishing championships have also been held at Lago di Pietrafitta.
Lago di Pietrafitta is also a destination for walks and has a fitness trail. In addition to a museum, fossils and churches, Pietrafitta therefore offers a clear opportunity for outdoor exercise. When choosing a hotel in Pietrafitta, you can therefore consider whether your focus is more on palaeontological and ecclesiastical history or on walks and activities by the lake.
