Pupaggi: Churches, Castle History and Nature

Church Art from Several Centuries

The Chiesa di San Sebastiano was built in the 13th century and has Romanesque features on its outer side walls. Inside, there are numerous frescoes from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. The ceiling also features a decoration attributed to Jacopo Zampolini, dated to around 1480. This church building therefore allows several periods of design to be traced.

The Church of Madonna della Ginestra preserves a fresco of the Madonna and Child. The fresco of the Madonna and Child has remained intact inside and is a destination for pilgrimages. At the same time, the remains of the small church, which suffered severe damage in the 1997 earthquake, are awaiting reconstruction. Castello di Pupaggi and Its Stories

The Castello di Pupaggi developed in the 14th century around an existing medieval core with a church and a dovecote tower. Because of its historical and architectural significance, the Castello is protected as part of the architectural and landscape heritage. Its protected status complements the building history of the Castello.

The legend of Bella Pupa is set in Pupaggi and tells of a young woman who was hidden in the highest part of the castle.

Natural Area and Cycling Route

The Boschi di Terne - Pupaggi area is a Natura 2000 site under the Habitats Directive and covers an area of 1,460 hectares. The wolf (Canis lupus) is one of the protected species in the area. When observing nature, interest in the area can focus equally on the landscape and the wolf (Canis lupus).

Cycling and Culinary Experiences

The Anello di Montagna Grande is classified as a moderate to easy route and is suitable for people with prior experience on two wheels. The route therefore primarily appeals to cycling travellers who base their choice of tour on an existing level of experience. In addition, the Castello di Pupaggi offers its guests truffle hunting with a dog in the surrounding forest. The Norcineria courses include the active processing of pork: from selecting and grinding the meat, through seasoning the mixture, to stuffing.
