Protte: Castle Walls, Churches and Cycling Tours

Protte Among Castle Walls and Landscapes

The inhabited center of Protte lies within the castle walls. The village combines the fortified settlement with cultural and historical traces from different periods. This cultural focus is complemented by easy and moderately difficult cycling tours with a variety of routes. These routes range from connections between villages to paths through cultivated fields.

The Castle and the Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista

The castle of Protte was built in 1388 on the site of a previously existing open settlement. The old parish church of San Giovanni Battista is located within the walls. It was rebuilt several times; flooding of the Marroggia River led to an almost complete reconstruction in 1565. The portal dates from the 16th century, and the church also contains frescoes from the Umbrian school.

Roman Traces and Madonna delle Grazie

A Roman travertine gravestone with an inscription for the tomb of the physician Q. Anneo Tebulo came from the surroundings of a farmhouse that belonged to the monastery of S. Luca before 1881. Protte is also home to the small church of Madonna delle Grazie, which is also called Santa Maria delle Grazie. It stands along the road that connects Protte with the Via Tuderte from Beroide. The image of Madonna delle Grazie depicts the Madonna and Child, together with the later-added holy intercessors Rocco and Sebastiano.

Cycling Tours Through Fields and Landscapes

Protte can also be considered for cycling plans based on various routes. The first completely flat section of a moderately difficult cycling tour passes through Protte, Beroide and Castel San Giovanni and ends in Mercatello; the route therefore runs through several villages. An easy cycling tour to Protte follows a quiet side road through cultivated fields; views of the Monti Martani open up to the right, while to the left there are views of Monte Serano and the mountains of Valnerina. Another easy cycling tour uses the Spoleto–Assisi cycle path and then continues along ordinary roads toward Beroide. When planning the day, the specific route through Protte can be taken into account: one route follows a quiet side road through cultivated fields, while the other first uses the Spoleto–Assisi cycle path and then ordinary roads.

Cultural Events in Protte

As part of the municipal program “Libro d’ingresso 2025,” Pino Strabioli read from “Mutazioni” by Luis Gabriel Santiago at 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the Fattoria Sociale in Protte. The 8 p.m. start time clearly places the reading in the evening. The Festa Paesana di Protte took place from August 8 to August 15, 2016, as its 16th edition. The Fattoria Sociale has its operational headquarters at Loc. Protte 27, Spoleto (PG).
