Rosciolo: Frescoes, Abbey and Hilly Landscape

Rosciolo and Umbrian Fresco Art

Santa Maria di Pieve Pagliaccia preserves a fresco cycle featuring a Crucifixion and a Flagellation from 1260. This cycle is considered exceptionally important in the history of Umbrian art. Another fresco cycle from 1320 depicts a Madonna and Child enthroned with angels. It is influenced by Giottesque and Sienese painting. Santa Maria di Pieve Pagliaccia also preserves one of the few surviving examples of 13th- and 14th-century Umbrian painting. The chronological sequence of 1260 and 1320 brings together two medieval image cycles at Santa Maria di Pieve Pagliaccia.

Santa Maria Valdiponte Abbey in Montelabate can be traced back to a notarial deed from 996. Paintings by Fiorenzo di Lorenzo and Bartolomeo Caporali are preserved in the abbey church. The cloister provides access to an ancient crypt.
