San Giustino: Culture, History and Trails in the Valtiberina

San Giustino between Villa, History and Landscape

If you would like to combine cultural history with trails through the landscape, San Giustino offers several different ways to do so. The main attractions include villas and museums, the history of Cospaia, archaeological traces at Colle Plinio, and hiking and cycling trails through the Umbrian Valtiberina. The themes range from architecture and archaeology to regional heritage and outdoor activities.

Villa Magherini Graziani and Pliny’s Legacy

Villa Magherini Graziani was designed in the early years of the 17th century on a hill above the upper Tiber Valley and offers panoramic views over the Alta Valle del Tevere. The villa houses the Museo Pliniano. It displays finds from the Villa in Tuscis; experts attribute this villa to Pliny the Younger. Here, architectural history and the study of a Roman villa come together in one place.

At Colle Plinio, excavations uncovered the remains of a Roman villa that experts attribute to Pliny the Younger’s Villa in Tuscis. The archaeological remains include a complete Roman bathing complex and a temple dedicated to the goddess Ceres. Villa Cappelletti, a Neoclassical building with a large garden, also stands at Colle Plinio.

Cospaia: History and Trails

The Sentiero del Contrabbandiere begins in the village of Cospaia. The trail runs for 12.5 kilometres through Umbria, Tuscany and the Marche. A shorter option is the Anello di Corposano: the 7.6-kilometre hiking trail is classified as difficulty level E according to the CAI scale and is associated with the Brisce di Corposano and the Cascate del Vertola. The Anello di Corposano also passes through centuries-old chestnut groves where the local “Briscia di Corposano” grows. The different lengths and trail profiles make it easier to choose according to your preferred hiking pace.

Cospaia also has a distinctive political past. Cospaia’s independent status was officially recognised by Florence and the Papal States in 1448. Tobacco cultivation contributed to the prosperity of the State of Cospaia; the plant soon became known there as “tornabuona grass”.

Museums, Mills and Regional Heritage

The Museo Storico e Scientifico del Tabacco is housed in the former building of the tobacco growers’ consortium near San Giustino railway station. The Museo Storico Pliniana preserves hundreds of unique artefacts and fully operational machines. Together with Villa Magherini Graziani, the Museo Pliniano and the excavations at Colle Plinio, these places offer different perspectives on the history of the area without requiring you to focus on a single theme.

The local character also includes the medieval water mill, Mulino Medievale dei Renzetti. It continues to produce grain flours made exclusively by slow milling on natural stone. On the last weekend of May, San Giustino hosts a historical commemorative event for the independent Republic of Cospaia. The programme includes food and wine offerings, musical and artistic performances, conferences and other cultural events.

Cycling through the Valtiberina

For a more relaxed way of travelling through the landscape, there is the Ciclovia del Tevere. It is an easy and almost entirely flat cycle route through the gentle landscapes of the Umbrian Valtiberina. Along the way, the route alternates between unpaved sections on its own track and paved, lightly trafficked roads. If you would like to divide your days between museums, historic sites, hikes and a flat cycling tour, San Giustino offers several clearly distinct thematic options.
