Pozzuolo amid hills, history and culinary delights

Pozzuolo is situated in a hilly location at 358 metres above sea level, a few kilometres from the border with Tuscany, and offers panoramic views over the Valdichiana and Lake Trasimeno.

Churches with a long history

The ancient Chiesa di Pozzuolo has been documented since AD 1026. Santa Margherita da Cortona was baptised in this church in 1247. The Chiesa del Pentimento, also known as the Cappella di Santa Margherita, lies on the border between Pozzuolo and Petrignano. It was built in 1757 to commemorate the place where Santa Margherita found the body of Arsenio. The interior includes an original brick altar and two paintings depicting Santa Margherita and the enthroned Madonna. The 1757 building therefore belongs to a later period than the Chiesa di Pozzuolo, documented since 1026.

Beyond its churches, Pozzuolo also offers visitors other points of interest: events as well as wine and olive oil tastings complement the town's historical character.

Palazzo Moretti-Costanzi and Franco Rasetti

Palazzo Moretti-Costanzi is a historic 17th-century aristocratic residence in Pozzuolo Umbro. It houses a permanent museum complex. Since 2008, the palazzo has housed the permanent documentary exhibition and archive dedicated to Franco Rasetti.

Historical traces and events

Another historical topic is the 1383 castle-building project: the inhabitants of Pozzuolo asked Perugia for permission to build a castle intended to provide protection from the wars. The smuggling caves in Pozzuolo, created in the 18th century to conceal goods, are still visible today.

The Palio dei Fiaschi is a historic race between the contrade of Pozzuolo, held in September to commemorate farming traditions associated with grape harvesting and wine bottling. Five contrade take part: Castellaro, Centro, Mulino, Fonte and Scopeti. Pozzuolo Umbro also hosts the recurring Festa della Fisica, which reached its eighth edition at Palazzo Moretti in 2026. The event offers the public free workshops on physics, geology and palaeontology, biology, photography and the environment. The Palio and the Festa della Fisica represent two different types of event.

Cantina Goccia offers several wine tastings at its winery at Loc. Nardelli 2, Pozzuolo Umbro: Goccia Express, Diversamente Umbri, Degustazione Creativa and Nardelli Experience. Reservations are recommended for Goccia Express and required for the other three experiences. Diversamente Umbri includes a guided tasting of five wines, a guided cellar tour and bruschette with locally produced extra virgin olive oil. The Nardelli Experience includes a guided tasting of three extra virgin olive oils at Cooperativa Oleificio Pozzuolese, Via Croce 3, Nardelli, as well as a 100 ml bottle of olive oil as a gift. The culinary offerings have different focuses: Cantina Goccia conducts wine tastings, while the Nardelli Experience includes three extra virgin olive oils.
