Triponzo between thermal springs, rivers and history

Triponzo combines a distinctive river landscape with traces of cultural history. The Bagni di Triponzo thermal baths form a separate focal point alongside it.

Via della Cura and the landscape along the Nera and Corno

The municipal Via della Cura circular trail includes the ancient baths of Triponzo as one of its cultural, historical and scenic attractions. It begins in Borgo Cerreto and ends at the Bagni di Triponzo.

Castello di Triponzo stands at the confluence of the Nera and Corno rivers. It is situated on porous limestone deeply cut by water. A square tower dating from the 14th century rises above the settlement. The tower projects from the fortification wall of Castello di Triponzo and gives the historic townscape a clearly recognisable architectural form.

Historic paths and structures

At Balza Tagliata there is a pre-Roman half-gallery carved into the rock, which was used to cross the Corno River. The former Spoleto–Norcia railway line also ran along Balza Tagliata, passing through a tunnel cut into the rock of the gorge.

The remains of a Roman bridge can also be found in the area around Triponzo. A hydroelectric power station, considered an example of industrial archaeology, is located nearby as well. Together, these structures broaden the view of the area beyond the medieval castle and show how rivers, gorges and transport links have shaped the history of the region.

Thermal springs and Bagni di Triponzo

The natural springs of Bagni di Triponzo emerge along a front approximately 500 metres long. They are located around 3 kilometres from Triponzo, on the right bank of the Nera. In the area of the Antichi Bagni di Triponzo, there are 18 sulphurous thermal springs with emerald-green water. The springs therefore form a separate focal point alongside the town centre and the historic trail landscape.

The Bagni di Triponzo complex is accessible by car and has a car park. Structural provisions have been made to ensure access for people with reduced mobility. The complex includes three thermal pools and an underground wellness area with a sauna, Turkish bath, sensory shower and ice waterfall. This specific range of facilities makes the Bagni a place where the natural environment of the springs meets an extensive wellness offering.

After seasons with particularly heavy rainfall, water may continue to drip from the cavities above the site of the ancient thermal baths. Interesting stalactite and stalagmite formations can be found there. Water therefore remains a defining feature not only of the springs and river courses, but also appears in the cavities above the historic baths.

Hiking with precise route guidance

A hiking trail in the Valnerina area passes through the centre of Triponzo. The section beyond the Bagni di Triponzo is considered exposed. Hiking boots and particular caution on wet ground are recommended for this section.
