Folk Culture at the Casa dei Racconti

The Casa dei Racconti is located on Via della Scuola. The research and documentation centre for oral literature is also a branch of the Ecomuseo della Dorsale Appenninica Umbra. It presents an interactive anthology of local folk culture, with its rites, rhythms and values. Churches and Historic Townscapes

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta dates from around 1176 and contains wall frescoes by artists from the school of Giotto. These include Giovanni Boccati and Girolamo di Giovanni, as well as members of the artistic dynasty of Pietro, Cola, Arcangelo di Cola and Giacomo di Cola. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista was initially built in the 13th century as a Benedictine priory dependent on the Abbazia di Sassovivo.

The main tower of Vallo di Nera was built in the 15th century to protect the town and lies between Porta Ranne and Portella. Together with the churches and the Casa dei Racconti, it reveals the town’s different historical layers.

Cycle Path, River and Hiking Route

Vallo di Nera offers various options for active days. The town is one of the nearby highlights along the former Spoleto–Norcia railway cycle path. In addition, a rafting descent of around 5 kilometres leads from Vallo di Nera to Sant’Anatolia di Narco.

A hiking route begins in the fortified town of Castel San Felice, passes through the forests on the slopes of Monte Beregni and finally descends to Vallo di Nera. It follows Trail 538 through the forest and reaches the Casale del Piano clearing at an elevation of 882 metres. Continuing downhill, the route reaches Vallo di Nera through the forest via an unpaved road and a valley. This clearly connects the starting point, forest sections, elevation and destination for your day planning.
