Monterivoso between Sacred History, Museum and Landscape

Monterivoso focuses on sacred architecture, everyday history and routes through the surrounding landscape. If you would like to combine culture and activity on a trip, you will find concrete starting points here: the Chiesa di Sant’Antonio, the Museo etnografico della civiltà preindustriale “Casarivoso” and several routes with different characteristics.

The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio

The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio dates back to the 15th century and is integrated into the castle walls. It is dominated by a tall square tower dating from the 13th century. Inside are six patronage altars with 18th-century stucco decorations, as well as valuable paintings created between the early 17th and early 18th centuries. The church also includes rooms used by the confraternities and an organ.

Among the notable works of art is a painting created in 1560 by Francesco Nardini from Sant’Angelo in Vado. It depicts Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. During restoration work, 16th-century frescoes were uncovered in the presbytery beneath the 18th-century whitewash. This makes it possible to view the church interior across several eras without individual details losing their own historical character.

Ethnography and Local History

The Museo etnografico della civiltà preindustriale “Casarivoso” is located in a building in the lower part of the town and displays more than 2,000 exhibits. One section focuses on machines used for grinding and distributing olive oil. Another covers hunting, fishing, livestock farming and traditional crafts. The old watchtower, which has been restored and returned to its original condition, also represents the history of Monterivoso.

Monterivoso was a mandatory transit point for travelers continuing from the Dogana del Salto del Cieco on the border between the Kingdom of Naples and the Papal States to their destinations. This historical connection adds the former importance of the town as a crossing point to the perspective offered by the castle walls, the church and the watchtower.

Museums, Mountains and Waterfall in the Surrounding Area

The immediate surroundings of Monterivoso include the Museo delle Mummie, a museum, the Abbazia di San Pietro in Valle, a monastery, as well as Monte Petano and Monte Solenne, each a mountain. The surrounding area also includes Castello Nobili Vitelleschi, a castle, the Museo CAOS, a museum, the Cascata delle Marmore, a waterfall, and Monte Fionchi, a mountain. The possible destinations therefore range from culture and architectural history to mountain landscapes and a striking waterfall.

Cycling Routes, Hiking Trail and Climbing Sector

The Il Balcone climbing sector can be reached from the Le Mummie climbing wall via a signposted path leading towards Monterivoso in 10 to 15 minutes. For cyclists, the 10.3-kilometre Arrone–Tripozzo–Monterivoso–Ferentillo route is a suitable option. It has a mixed surface and is suitable for mountain bikes, gravel bikes, touring bikes and city bikes. The route descends towards Monterivoso and then continues on a paved road from Monterivoso to Ferentillo.

A CAI hiking route follows the SP 74 to just before the town of Monterivoso and then continues for approximately 1.2 kilometres along an unpaved road. The differing information on length, surface and route helps you arrange cultural visits, cycling stages, climbing destinations and hikes according to your preferred travel pace.

Other destinations: Civitella Del Lago, San Carlo, Vigne, Montecchio, Calvi Dell Umbria, Cecalocco, Portaria and Guardea.
