Portaria between the Monti Martani and Old Routes

Portaria lies on the slopes of the Monti Martani at approximately 450 meters above sea level. Its elevation provides the town with a distinct landscape setting, while its routes and buildings tell stories from different periods. The route from Carsulae via Macerino and Cancelli to Portaria descends after the Cima-Forca Pass.

When planning the route, the change in terrain is a factor in its own right: after the Cima-Forca Pass, the following section descends to Portaria.

Historic Buildings in the Town Center

Portaria's historic center has a fortification system. Portaria has its origins in the 12th century. Piazza Giuseppe Verdi is paved with travertine squares and bricks laid in a herringbone pattern. The Torre dell'Orologio dates from 1200 and was restored in 1600 and 1967. It is topped by a raised structure and finished with battlements and a pinnacle containing the bell.

The Porta Spoletina served as an entrance to the settlement of Portaria and as a landmark for pilgrims traveling to Spoletium along the Via Flaminia. The Church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo also points to an earlier building layer: it was built on an existing structure. Material from the ancient city of Carsulae was used in its construction; it is visible in a rustic stone façade.

Events with Historical Connections

Portaria connects its architectural traces with two events that highlight different aspects of the town's history. On the second weekend of May, the arrival of Lucrezia Borgia in 1499 is reenacted. In the first half of July, the grain-threshing demonstration TREBBIATURA DE 'NA VORDA has been held for several years with the participation of local residents. The demonstration includes threshing with a historic threshing machine and the construction of a pajaro. Thus, over the course of the year, both the remembrance of a historic event and a demonstration of traditional grain work take center stage. The two events take place during different periods of the year. The second weekend of May and the first half of July therefore represent separate travel periods, not the same festival date for the same trip. For annual planning, they remain clearly separate occasions.

Transhumance Route and Place Name

The history of the routes includes the Strada delle Pecore, an old transhumance route that passes through Portaria. South of Portaria lies the Porta Romana. Portaria was formerly known as Porcaria; the name is probably connected with pig pastures in the area. Together, these routes, gates and names create a picture in which the landscape is not merely a backdrop but part of the town's traditional history.

Another facet of the rural character can be seen at Frantoio Oleario Palmadori. There, traditional olive crushing with granite stone mills is preserved. Frantoio Oleario Palmadori uses exclusively mechanical cold-extraction methods for its olive oil.
