The Valserra Valley forms a natural link between the Terni basin and Spoleto. In the centre of Cecalocco, the Madonna del Rosario dates from the late 16th century and is built entirely of stone. Inside the Madonna del Rosario is a statue of the Madonna del Carmelo.

San Giovenale and the Ancient Route

The Chiesa di San Giovenale stands outside Cecalocco on the ancient route that led uphill from the Via Flaminia. It is said to have been built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries beside an older watchtower; this was later converted into its bell tower. San Giovenale is also associated with a tradition involving a procession from the village to the church. The Chiesa di San Giovenale was inaccessible because part of the roof had collapsed.

Cecalocco’s Former Nativity Play

A distinctive cultural episode was Cecalocco’s former artistic Nativity play. Between 1993 and 2001, it attracted thousands of people and won first prize in 1998 in the Praesepium Historiae Populi competition. The Nativity play was housed in an old farmhouse in the village; starting from the old stable, visitors viewed it room by room by candlelight. This combination of a rural building, staged representation and local tradition gives Cecalocco’s cultural offering a distinctive historical facet.
