Poggio Aquilone: History, Landscape and Ancient Paths

A hilltop village between river and biosphere

Poggio Aquilone is located on the summit of a marl-limestone hill at an altitude of 295 m, overlooking the Fersinone, a tributary of the Néstore. At the same time, the village lies in the Monte Peglia area, which is recognised as a MAB-UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Church and medieval history

The parish church of Sant'Egidio in Poggio Aquilone can be traced back to a cadastre drawn up around 1500. Henry VII of Luxembourg was hosted in Poggio Aquilone in 1312. In the 13th century, Castel del Poggio de l’Aquilone was associated with the Cadolingi counts of Marsciano.

Statute and archaeological traces

The statute of Poggio Aquilone was drawn up in 1442 and comprised 109 articles regulating the small community. A Copper Age and Stone Age burial was discovered near the village in 1898. The flint and copper objects found there are now kept in the Archaeological Museum of Bologna. Those interested in history can therefore trace a line from prehistory through medieval governance to the local history of around 1500.

Ancient paths through the Fersinone area

The Poggio Aquilone–Civitella dei Conti route follows an ancient path towards the Fersinone Valley. It offers views of the Fersinone Valley and Poggio Aquilone. The ancient path thus connects a specific direction through the landscape with views of the valley and hills, giving the route a clear connection to its surroundings.

Another route leads downhill from the old borgo via Podere Foiano and Podere Terre Molino towards a stream. Poggio Aquilone is also connected to San Venanzo by a route that runs through the valley of the Torrente Fersinone and then climbs towards Poggio Aquilone. Getting there and choosing a location

Poggio Aquilone can be reached from nearby Marsciano or via a steeply ascending road that branches off from the road to San Venanzo. Umbricelli and early-summer events

Poggio Aquilone is associated with a festival of handmade umbricelli, held in the last week of May and the first week of June. The village also hosts patron saint celebrations for S. Pasquale Baylon during that same last week of May and first week of June.
