San Liberato between lake, nature and Umbrian culture

San Liberato brings together landscape, local history and regional events within a compact thematic area. The village is located on a promontory and overlooks the eponymous Lago di San Liberato and the Oasi di San Liberato nature oasis. The lake is an artificial reservoir used for hydropower generation, while the oasis is considered a preferred stopover for migratory birds.

Lake, oasis and trails through the landscape

Several routes run through the surrounding area. One of them includes a cycle and pedestrian path designed to provide gentle access to Natura 2000 sites. The cycle and pedestrian path is also connected to the CAI trail network. For planning excursions, the Natura 2000 sites and the CAI trail network provide two specific geographical reference points.

The route through the Gole del Nera leads from the ruins of the Ponte d’Augusto along a disused railway line and through the Gole del Nera to Lago di San Liberato. In the area around San Liberato, this trail follows the disused railway line for approximately 5 kilometres and runs alongside the Nera River; this distance can serve as a guide when planning a day section. The route offers opportunities for hiking, running, mountain biking, horse riding and canoeing.

The Via Romana also leads into the area of Lago di San Liberato, runs along the lake and the canal, and continues via a country road towards Parco di Otricoli.

Historical traces in the townscape

The square watchtower was the centre around which the castle and the village of San Liberato developed. The watchtower is integrated into the settlement.

The Church of San Liberato Abate e Martire was built by monks from Castel Sant’Elia.

Festivals, local cuisine and reading culture

Every summer, San Liberato hosts the Sagra degli Gnocchi e dei prodotti tipici umbri. The Sagra del Porchetto e dei prodotti tipici locali took place from 16 June to 25 June 2023 at the Centro Civico San Liberato in Narni. In 2023, it was the 16th edition. The festival included comedy performances, dialect theatre, dance shows, children’s games and DJ sets. The main speciality at the food stall was pork knuckle.

Biblioteche nei Borghi returned to the Centro Civico in San Liberato after an earlier edition. The programme offers free reading sessions for children aged 3 to 10, as well as the loan of books and picture books. It also provides reading recommendations for families. Registration is required to participate.
