Lozzo Atestino is a destination for travelers who want to combine nature, history, and regional cuisine in a single trip. Monte Lozzo defines the municipality’s geographical character; historic buildings in Lozzo and Valbona complement the landscape with tangible traces from several centuries. This gives you different interests to consider when planning your trip: panoramas and trails, Castello di Valbona, the Church of Saints Leone and Carpoforo, as well as local food and drinks.

Monte Lozzo: Panoramas and historical traces

The municipality of Lozzo Atestino encompasses the mountain of the same name, which is located in isolation west of the Euganean Hills. A circular trail runs across Monte Lozzo, offering an almost complete panoramic view of the Euganean area and the central-western plain. Those who include Trail No. 5 in their plans can combine the mountain landscape with a chapter of military history from 1944. Trail No. 5 – Mt. Lozzo Trail has its own historical significance: it passes traces of a defensive line built by the Germans in 1944, including depressions cut deeply into the trachyte.

Castello di Valbona and traces of prehistoric settlements

The prehistoric past is also tangible at Monte Lozzo. Traces of prehistoric settlements include large hearths discovered during the 1904 excavations at Pegorile and Misereo. Those exploring Valbona from a cultural and historical perspective will find both the medieval castle and the Oratorio di San Rocco, built later. Castello di Valbona was built in the first quarter of the 13th century and completed in its present form before 1280. It is one of the few castles that survived almost intact the decree issued by the Republic of Venice in 1426 ordering the destruction of private castles. Valbona therefore offers a historical focal point where medieval architectural history stands alongside much older traces of settlement.

Villa Lando, Correr, Church, and Oratorio

Villa Lando, Correr in Lozzo Atestino dates from the 18th century and is surrounded by a remarkable park with centuries-old trees. In Lozzo, the Church of Saints Leone and Carpoforo was built in the second half of the 19th century to a design by Giuseppe Riccoboni. It features a monumental staircase in the Neoclassical style. In the small hamlet of Valbona, the Oratorio di San Rocco was built by the Lando family in the 16th century and later expanded in the 19th century.

Bigoli, Schissotto, and Vin S-ciaveto

Lozzo Atestino’s culinary side is showcased at the Festa dei Bigoli, Schissotto e Vin s-ciaveto. There, you can watch handmade bigoli being prepared with the traditional bigolaro. The Festa is a distinct culinary event in Lozzo Atestino. Schissotto baked in a wood-fired oven and Vin S-ciaveto from the Euganean Hills are also offered.
