Scardovari combines an expansive waterscape with fishing culture, regional cuisine and paths through the Po Delta. At its centre is the Sacca degli Scardovari: a large, extensive body of water between the mouths of the Po di Gnocca and the Po delle Tolle. The lagoon extends several kilometres inland and faces towards the sea. Those choosing a hotel or other accommodation in Scardovari for their stay will find a place whose character can be understood particularly well through its waters, fishing and local traditions.

The Sacca degli Scardovari and its waterscape

The changing salinity of the Sacca degli Scardovari results from the meeting of river water and the Adriatic’s salt water. This combination of fresh and salt water shapes not only the landscape but also an important regional flavour. The Oasi di Ca’ Mello is located near Scardovari and overlooks the Sacca degli Scardovari. Its paths can be explored on foot or by bicycle.

Mussel tradition and regional cuisine

The mussel “Cozza di Scardovari DOP” must be farmed and produced exclusively in the lagoon of the same name, the Sacca degli Scardovari. The combination of salty seawater and fresh water gives it a particular sweetness as well as especially tender, melt-in-the-mouth flesh. For your travel planning, Scardovari can therefore also be experienced through a specific culinary speciality that is closely connected to the lagoon. Il Fritulin di Corradin Gianluca offers culinary boat trips in the Sacca di Scardovari at Via Roma 203/a in Scardovari.

Fishing, cavàne and the history of the place name

Traditional cavàne, meaning fishermen’s houses built and supported on stilts above the water, shape the landscape of the Sacca degli Scardovari. The Museo della Pesca “Pesca & Dintorni” provides insights into the world of fishing in the Po Delta through images. Reservations for visits are made by telephone during office hours. The place name also refers to the regional natural environment: Scardovari derives from scardova, a freshwater fish that was once common in the area.

Cycling and paths through the lagoons

The 60-kilometre Anello della Donzella cycle path passes through Scardovari near the mouth of the Po di Tolle. Another way to explore the immediate surroundings is the “Nei luoghi degli Scardovari” excursion. It leads across the embankments of river branches, Buse and lagoons. Depending on your interests, you can therefore combine your stay with a cycling tour, a hike or a closer exploration of the fishing landscape. The paths of the Oasi di Ca’ Mello are expressly suitable for walking or cycling.

Orientation for your stay

The Sacca degli Scardovari is located approximately 35 kilometres from Loreo railway station on the Rovigo–Adria–Chioggia railway line. When choosing your accommodation, the location primarily offers a clear thematic focus: you can combine Scardovari with the lagoon, the cavàne, fishing culture and paths through the surrounding area. The month of June is also associated with the Sagra di SS. Pietro e Paolo in Scardovari. In addition to the landscape and cuisine, local traditions can therefore also be a focus of your travel planning.
