Collalto: Castle, Church of San Giorgio, and Paths Through History
Castello di Collalto and Its Plains
Castello di Collalto developed across three fortified levels surrounded by walls; traces of these walls are still clearly visible today. The Torre magna has been maintained and restored by the Collalto family in recent years. Despite the lack of reliable documentation, the origins of a first fortified center on the hill overlooking the Piave, from which Castello di Collalto emerged, are dated to 1110.
Chiesa di San Giorgio
The present-day Chiesa di San Giorgio was built in 1927 based on a design by the architect Domenico Rupolo. The church preserves the relic of the “Sacre Spine” as well as relics of Blessed Giuliana di Collalto. Chiesa di San Giorgio also contains two 17th-century wooden statues and an altarpiece created by Guido Pini depicting Saint George killing the dragon.
Squares and Paths in Collalto
Piazzetta Giovanni Paolo II in Collalto is designated as an information point and car park.
The guided tours of Collalto are connected with a forest path, ruined walls, and a tower overlooking the plain. The program also includes a walk centered on the legend of Bianca di Collalto through the medieval village and along the walls of the ruined castle.
Il Feudo dei Collalto is a path through the territory of the former fief of the lords of Collalto that can also be explored on foot. In addition to the fortified structures, the history of the former fief is therefore another theme you can follow along a route in Collalto.
Festivals and Culinary Character
The Festeggiamenti di San Giorgio begin in Collalto on April 23 with a Mass in honor of Saint George. The festivities include cultural evenings and gastronomic events centered on spit-roasted meat, called spiedo in Italian. The Mostra mercato di Collalto was renewed in 2003.
Collalto for Your Travel Planning
When selecting accommodation for your trip to Italy, you can consider Collalto according to your interests: Castello di Collalto and the Torre magna represent fortified history, while Chiesa di San Giorgio represents sacred art and local tradition. The connected paths lead to woodland, traces of walls, a tower overlooking the plain, and the former territory of the lords of Collalto’s fief. The Festeggiamenti di San Giorgio complement these highlights with cultural evenings, gastronomy, and the regional connection of spiedo. This allows you to align your choice of accommodation with a stay in which you can give different weight to historic buildings, walks, church art, or local festival culture.
