Treviso Between Urban History and Waterways

Treviso combines museums and art venues with the Sile and its canals. The Sile flows through the historic centre, while porticoed houses with frescoed façades line the Canale dei Buranelli. Piazza dei Signori is considered the heart of the city. Both the Palazzo dei Trecento and the Loggia dei Cavalieri are located on this square.

Art and Sacred Treasures

Treviso Cathedral houses frescoes by Giovanni Antonio de’ Sacchis, also known as “il Pordenone”, in the Cappella Malchiostro, as well as Titian’s altarpiece of the Annunciation. The Tesoro della Cattedrale is one of the most important collections of sacred goldsmithery in the Veneto. The Dominican church of San Nicolò has a chapter house with frescoes by Tommaso da Modena.

The Museo Santa Caterina includes an archaeological collection and an art gallery. Its holdings also include the cycle depicting the Stories of Saint Ursula by Tommaso da Modena. The Museo Luigi Bailo presents 20th-century art. At the Museo Diocesano di Treviso, you will find artefacts dating from the 4th to the 20th century AD; it also provides access to the crypt of Treviso Cathedral, which dates approximately from the 11th century.

The Gallerie delle Prigioni offers art education activities for children and guided tours for school groups. It is open on Fridays from 16:00 to 19:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 to 12:30 and from 15:00 to 19:00. The historic Casa dei Carraresi-Brittoni complex was restored in 1987 and designated as a congress and exhibition centre by the Fondazione Cassamarca.

Cycling Routes along the Sile

Treviso is part of the Special Protection Area “Fiume Sile: Sile Morto e ansa a S. Michele Vecchio”. Those wishing to combine a visit to the city with routes along the water will find several trails with different focuses. The L'Alzaia da Treviso route runs along well-maintained paved or unpaved paths. The E4 GiraSile cycle loop connects Treviso with Casale sul Sile and follows the banks of the Sile; it begins at Ponte della Gobba near Treviso’s historic centre.

Treviso is also located on the regional I4 Dolomiti-Mare cycling route, which forms part of the Munich–Venice cycle route on some sections. The first, partially passable section of the Treviso-Ostiglia begins in Treviso’s city centre and extends to Quinto di Treviso.

Local Flavours

Radicchio Rosso di Treviso IGP is part of the region’s distinctive character. After harvesting, a traditional forcing and blanching technique is used: the plants are immersed in spring-water basins for two weeks.
