Crespano Del Grappa: Churches, Museum and Routes to Cima Grappa

Crespano del Grappa reveals its history through a series of clearly distinguishable buildings. In the Cathedral of Saints Mark and Pancras, Venetian design and local sacred history come together: the building was constructed according to a design by the Venetian architect Giorgio Massari, and the foundation stone was laid on 3 October 1735. The main altar was created by Ludovico Torresini.

Romanesque Churches and Preserved Traces

The older building stock includes several churches, each with its own chronological and architectural profile. The Romanesque Church of San Pancrazio dates from the early 12th century and preserves a wooden crucifix from the 14th century. The old parish church of San Marco dates back to the period between the 10th and 12th centuries; only its historic bell tower remains today. San Paolo del Lastego stands on the western bank of the Lastego in the south of the town. The church is considered one of the oldest churches in the upper Treviso area and is completely preserved.

Madonna del Covolo and Sacred Architecture

The Madonna del Covolo sanctuary was built according to a design by Antonio Canova. The present sanctuary is a neoclassical building with a circular floor plan, a pronaos with a triangular pediment and Ionic columns. The pronaos is the projecting colonnaded area at the front of the building.

The Museo Storico della Grande Guerra

The Museo Storico della Grande Guerra 1915-1918 is housed in the Palazzo Reale San Marco. It contains around one thousand artefacts documenting everyday life at the front. The museum's specialist library contains 800 volumes on the First World War. The exhibition on the history of the First World War is divided into four thematic areas: provisions, field hospital, leisure and trench warfare. This means the focus is not only on military operations, but also on concrete areas of life that make everyday historical reality more tangible.

Routes to Cima Grappa

The Madonna del Covolo sanctuary is the starting point for numerous routes leading into the valley or to Cima Grappa. The historic Mulattiera del Grappa, CAI Trail 105, connects the sanctuary with Cima Grappa. Running parallel to it is the Direttissima, CAI Trail 106, intended for experienced hikers. In addition, a short forest path leads from the sanctuary to the Tre Busi spring, which is attributed with healing properties. For planning purposes, the short forest path to the Tre Busi spring differs from the steep, unpaved road to Madonna del Covolo.

From Crespano, a steep, scenic unpaved road lined with fifteen wayside shrines leads to Madonna del Covolo. These correspond to the Stations of the Cross. Along the way, you therefore encounter not only scenic points of interest, but also religious and historical landmarks.
