Malafesta between spring waters and Friulian culture

Malafesta shows how religious history, a water-shaped landscape and Friulian culture come together in one place. For planning your trip, the destination offers several different ways to explore it: you can visit a 17th-century oratory, observe springs along the Roggia Vidimana, discover regional event content or consider including a suggested cycling connection in your plans.

Oratory and historical references

The Oratorio di Malafesta is a religious oratory built in the 17th century. It is dedicated to Sant’Antonio da Padova and was inaugurated in 1666. Malafesta therefore has a clearly identifiable example of religious architectural and local history, which can be easily considered a cultural focus of a visit.

The Ristorantino 1907 is another specific point of interest in the area. At the restaurant, you can enjoy the house dishes and reserve a table. The historic premises of Ristorantino 1907 already existed at the beginning of the 20th century. Thus, alongside the oratory, there is a dining venue with its own historical depth.

Springs along the Roggia Vidimana

The landscape around Malafesta is shaped by water phenomena. At the level of the settlement, a band of year-round springs begins and extends northward beyond the province to irrigate the area. In the Zona di risorgive near Malafesta, bubbles emerge from the ground at several points along the Roggia Vidimana. This is caused by rising groundwater.

You can reach the Fontanàs di Malafesta via the area of the unpaved road Via Paludi, immediately after the bridge over the Roggia Vidimana. The precise orientation provided by the bridge, road and watercourse makes this landscape feature more tangible for visitors without reducing the water-shaped surroundings to merely a place name.

Friulian events and regional cuisine

Another way to experience Malafesta is through events. The sMAiLAfiesta furlana 2024 was the sixth edition and was organized by Polisportiva Malafesta-Villanova. The program included the environmental cycling tour “Nei nostri campi”. It also included a fishing competition in the Roggia Mulino; minors were allowed to take part only when accompanied.

The event combined these activities with Friulian cultural offerings: the program featured Friulian music, readings of Friulian poetry and a theatrical performance. There was also a Friulian dinner with gnocchi with duck, braised cod, snails in sauce, peasant-style tripe, beans and meat in sauce. In 2025, the Smailafiesta and Festa dell'Emigrante took place in Malafesta di San Michele al Tagliamento; it could be reached by car or via ATVO bus lines.

Putting Malafesta into perspective by bicycle

The area in Malafesta can be reached via the footpath and cycle path along the Tagliamento and lies on a suggested cycling tourism connection from Alvisopoli (Municipality of Fossalta di P.) to Malafesta (Municipality of San Michele al T.).
