Mirano: Art, Waterways and Markets

Mirano reveals its character in several specific places: at the Duomo di San Michele Arcangelo, around the water basins and canals, in the public parks and in the squares with their markets. When you visit the town, you can combine cultural discoveries, historic landscapes and local events.

Art and Architectural History in the Duomo

The Duomo di San Michele Arcangelo dates from the 16th century and was rebuilt in 1684. Inside, it houses Giambattista Tiepolo's altarpiece “Miracolo di Sant'Antonio che riattacca il piede”. The Duomo also preserves a ceiling fresco by Giovanni De Min entitled “Giudizio universale”. Both works give the visit a clear art-historical focus, without requiring you to connect several locations.

Villa Morosini, Monico detta XXV Aprile is also one of Mirano's notable historic buildings. The villa was built around the middle of the 17th century and completed in 1661. Its park extends over more than three hectares and contains numerous statues with courtly themes from the 19th century. The park of Villa Morosini–XXV Aprile and the park of Villa Belvedere are located in the historic centre and follow the course of the Muson.

Water and Landscape around the Centre

Molini di Sotto is a decommissioned industrial complex in the historic centre of Mirano, oriented towards the boat harbour basin in front of it. Until the 1960s, the facility operated as a grain mill and oil mill. The basin was enlarged and dredged so that Burci boats could dock and manoeuvre. This place therefore brings industrial history and the waterscape together directly.

The Taglio Canal was excavated in 1606 to connect the Muson with the Riviera del Brenta. The Roman Graticolato is also still clearly recognisable in Mirano: straight roads intersect at right angles, while the agricultural land is regularly laid out. The public parks of Villa Belvedere and Villa Morosini–XXV Aprile cover a total of five hectares and follow the course of the Muson.

Markets and the Fiera di San Matteo

The Fiera di San Matteo takes place on the third weekend of September. Its first edition was authorised on 6 September 1477 by a decree of the Venetian Senate. Today, the Fiera offers popular entertainment with amusement rides and travelling shows, as well as a market selling various goods. If you plan your stay around this date, it provides a traditional event highlight on the calendar.

For a more everyday market visit, a farmers' market takes place in Mirano on Fridays in Piazza Martiri della Libertà. Piazza Martiri also hosts a market for antiques and used goods on the third Sunday of every month, except in July and August, organised by the municipality and Confcommercio del Miranese.

As part of the MIBI programme, Mirano offers the cycling routes “TOUR DELLE FRAZIONI” and “TRA VILLLE E CAMPAGNA”. The two routes complement the historic sites, waterways and agriculturally structured landscapes with an active perspective on the town and its surroundings.
