San Liberale: Church, Natural Area and Trails along the Zero

San Liberale combines a distinctive religious history with a natural area along the Zero river corridor. The foundations of the modern Chiesa di San Liberale contain the remains of the ancient Pieve di San Cassiano. The area also features natural sites, islands, museums and routes that give the town a range of different facets. The Chiesa di San Liberale was built in the Neo-Romanesque style; its construction is associated with Achille Vettorazzo. The remains of the ancient Pieve di San Cassiano lie beneath the modern church building. Natural area along the Zero river corridor

The Oasi Cave di Gaggio Nord is located in the SIC/ZPS area IT3250016 and is a protected natural area forming part of the Natura 2000 network. The Cave di Gaggio Nord nature reserve was established along the Zero river corridor to protect the environment, support social use and provide environmental education. The entrance to the Oasi Cave Gaggio is at Via Matteotti 26 and can be reached from the junction near Marcon in the direction of San Liberale.

Nature trails and cycling connections

The San Liberale–San Michele Vecchio nature trail connects the center of San Liberale with the San Michele Vecchio floodplain. The San Liberale–San Michele Vecchio cycle path is the continuation of a previous route; it starts in the center of Quarto d’Altino and follows roads and unpaved paths around San Michele Vecchio and Le Crete. The two routes therefore appeal to different interests: the nature trail highlights the connection between the town center and the floodplain, while the cycle path describes a longer route with changing surfaces.

On the route from Marcon, you return to San Liberale. In the direction of Gaggio, you reach the junction with the Praello; from there, a detour to the southern Praello quarries is possible. This allows you to distinguish between returning to San Liberale and adding an extra loop in the Praello area when planning your day, without treating the different route sections as identical.

Islands, museums and other nearby destinations

The National Archaeology Museum of Altino is located near San Liberale. The islands of Carbonera, Isola dei Laghi and Mazzorbo are also nearby. Cultural excursions in the area around San Liberale can also include the Museo del Merletto, the Museo Ebraico and the Fondaco dei Tedeschi. Spiaggia Lungomare d’Annunzio is located farther away in the wider region. The range therefore extends from archaeology and religious history to island landscapes, museums and a coastal destination.
