Affi: Churches, Monte Moscal and Hiking
Affi combines landscapes, architectural history and hiking to offer different ways of exploring Italy. The town can be discovered through its striking religious buildings and historical traces, as well as Monte Moscal, the Valsorda and organized hiking events.
Churches from Several Centuries
The history of sacred architecture reflects various eras and styles. The Church of San Bartolomeo dates from the 13th century and is located in Località Caorsa. The Church of San Pietro in Vincoli was built in 1761 over a pre-existing Romanesque chapel from the 11th century and rebuilt in the neoclassical style. The Church of Sant'Andrea dates from the 12th century, is Romanesque in style and was largely built from stone from Incaffi.
Traces of Defense and Transportation
The stone defensive tower still standing today is located on Via Pila. It dates back to a construction project permitted in 899 to protect against Hungarian invasions. Another historical trace is Affi's former railway station, which is now used as a library. The Affi–Garda railway line was closed on July 1, 1956. In Affi, you therefore encounter both the history of medieval defense and the memory of a former railway connection.
Monte Moscal and Fossil Discoveries
Monte Moscal is a landscape feature in Affi and a destination for numerous tourist excursions. It rises 427 meters above the plain. Its limestone rocks formed in the Oligocene and Miocene; numerous fossils have been found there.
The Landscape Between Incaffi and Bardolino
The Valsorda descends from Incaffi to Bardolino. This change in elevation is a concrete planning factor when organizing a hike; the starting point and destination are not in the same place.
Hiking as an Event and Endurance Challenge
The Festival del Cammino is an annual three-day event in Affi dedicated to hiking as a contribution to well-being and discovery. Its three-day duration provides a separate framework for planning the timing of a stay in Affi. The Ultra Walking Challenge is an endurance hiking challenge on the Percorsi Tricolore. It is aimed both at experienced hikers and at people who enjoy hiking. As an endurance hiking challenge, it establishes a separate framework for managing personal time during the trip.
Arrival and Choice of Accommodation Location
For arrival, the Affi interchange on the Brenner motorway is relevant: it gives tourists from Germany and Northern Europe direct access to Lake Garda. The Brenner motorway and Lake Garda provide the regional framework for traveling to Affi and staying there. When choosing accommodation in Affi, you can take your personal interests into account—for example, churches and the defensive tower for architectural history, Monte Moscal and the Valsorda for landscapes, or the festival and challenge for hiking.
