Fumane combines prehistoric archaeology, vineyards, waterways and historic trails to create a diverse destination.
Prehistory and Historic Buildings
At the heart of its cultural history is the Grotta di Fumane, one of the most important known prehistoric archaeological sites in Europe. The cave opens at an altitude of 350 metres in the Parco Naturale Regionale della Lessinia, giving the surrounding area a distinctive archaeological dimension.
Several buildings also make Fumane and its wider municipal area interesting. The Santuario della Madonna de La Salette is a religious building dating from 1864. The Chiesa Vecchia di Cavalo is an old church of Romanesque origin in the wider municipal area of Fumane. In Molina di Fumane, the historic Molin de Lorenso mill preserves its external waterwheel. Villa della Torre is a distinctive 16th-century villa set among the valuable vineyards of Valpolicella.
Water, Forest and Trails
The Valle dei Progni near Fumane is known for its abundance of water and numerous waterways. The Santuario della Madonna de La Salette is located in a wooded setting and offers panoramic views of the vineyards around Fumane.
The Parco delle Cascate di Molina has several signposted trails with rest areas. The park can be reached on foot in just a few minutes from the medieval village of Molina di Fumane. The combination of village, trails and waterfalls can therefore be planned as a separate part of a stay around Fumane.
Walks with Views and History
The Fumane Panoramica e Monte Sant’Urbano route begins in the centre of Fumane and follows a path lined with vineyards to a viewpoint over the valley and the Fumane plain. The Fumane Storica route is an easy walking trail that passes the medieval Church of San Micheletto. The two trails have different focuses: one combines the vineyard landscape with panoramic views, while the other is an easy walk with a historical connection.
The footpath to the Santuario della Madonna de La Salette begins at Fumane’s town hall square. The sanctuary can therefore also be regarded as the destination of a trail that starts directly in the town.
Wine and Regional Tastings
At Cavarena in Mazzurega, Fumane, visits as well as wine and olive oil tastings can be booked by reservation. The Cavarena gourmet tasting combines four wines with gastronomic accompaniments selected to match them. The olive oil tasting includes crostini made from artisanally produced bread, black olives and local cheese.
Scriani in Fumane offers another perspective on wine with a tasting of six typical Valpolicella wines. The culinary experiences therefore range from a single wine tasting to combinations of wine, olive oil and suitable gastronomic accompaniments.
