Caprino Veronese reveals its distinctive character through the combination of the Monte Baldo landscape, historic settlements, museums, art, and wine experiences.
Nature and trails on Monte Baldo
The Monte Baldo Ovest Natura 2000 site IT3210039 is located within the municipal area of Caprino Veronese and is designated both as an SCI and an SPA. Panoramic hiking trails on Monte Baldo complement this natural focus. The „Vie dell’Acqua“ offer a historic way to explore the surroundings: they follow old routes with fountains, washhouses, and mills. The Bergola spring in the Caprino valley also points to a long history of use, as it was already channelled in Roman times.
Cycling for different levels of ability
The demanding Monte Baldo cycling tour runs mainly along side roads and unpaved tracks that climb the southern side of the mountain. It requires fitness and mountain-biking skills. A private e-bike tour for experienced riders crosses Monte Baldo via historic sites and alpine pastures, with the landscape changing throughout the year.
Museums and historical traces
The Museo Civico Paleontologico-Archeologico preserves a paleontological collection as well as archaeological artefacts from the Monte Baldo area. The finds range from the Palaeolithic to Roman times. The Museo Civico di Caprino Veronese is housed on the ground floor of the 18th-century Palazzo Carlotti.
Places with a history of their own
In the centre of Platano, a hamlet of Caprino Veronese, stands the monumental oriental plane tree Platano dei Cento Bersaglieri, also known as Platano dei 100 bersaglieri, which is considered a national monument. In Lubiara, Villa Colpani was built by the Colpani noble family between 1535 and 1789. Villa Nichesola, also known as Villa dei Quattro Camini, is a rare aristocratic residence from the 15th century in Platano. Corte Carrara in Carrara di Pesina was built in the 15th century as a simple and functional palazzo-farmhouse.
Art and religious heritage
Il Compianto sul Cristo Morto is a sculptural group made of organogenic limestone dating from the 14th century and originally decorated with polychrome paint. The work is attributed to the „Master of Santa Anastasia“, who was later identified as Rigino di Enrico. It is dated to the first half of the 14th century.
Ceredello and Tenuta La Presa
The Chiesa di Santa Cristina in the Ceredello district dates from the 13th century and stands on the remains of an ancient Roman temple. The annual Festa di Santa Cristina includes religious celebrations, concerts, performances, and folk dancing; the official feast day is 24 July. At Tenuta La Presa, the tasting begins with a guided tour of the vineyards, ageing cellar, and sparkling-wine cellar, during which the wine-production method is explained. This is followed by a tasting of five wines as well as a selection of local salumi and formaggi.
