Cologna Veneta: Archaeology, Rocca and Historic Squares

Cologna Veneta offers a diverse gateway to history and local culture. The Museo Civico Archeologico di Cologna Veneta is housed in the former Monte di Pietà Palace. The museum was founded in 1896 following the accidental discovery of the Baldaria necropolis and documents archaeological finds from the area on the left bank of the Adige. Its chronological range extends from the Neolithic to the Lombard period – a framework in which the area’s long settlement history can be traced through tangible artefacts.

Archaeology between Baldaria and Cologna Veneta

The first exhibition room displays finds from a Neolithic village of the Fiorano culture at the Santa Giustina di Baldoria site. The second hall focuses on objects from the Cologna Veneta area dating to the Iron Age. In this way, the same museum brings together different periods of early history, from the Neolithic village to the Iron Age traces of the local surroundings.

Rocca, squares and notable buildings

The historic centre of Cologna Veneta was built on the remains of the old Rocca. Of the Rocca’s eight towers, only one remains today. Another historical connection can be seen at Piazza del Mandamento: it lies in the former bed of the Flumen Novum, which is now occupied by the Guà River. The Guà was diverted after the severe flood of 1901. Such local details give the squares and streets a clear historical context.

The Museo Lapidario brings together different periods and materials. It displays elements of an aqueduct, bricks, millstones, a Roman gravestone and four Gothic capitals from the old cathedral, as well as further artefacts from the Renaissance. The Duomo di Cologna Veneta was built from 1803 to 1821. The Teatro Comunale was constructed between 1856 and 1875 and designed in the Moorish style. In the Chiesa di San Bortolamio, Cologna Veneta preserves a Gothic Pietà painting. The Palazzo Pretorio is also known as the Capitaniato and is considered one of the particularly noteworthy buildings in Cologna Veneta.

Events throughout the year

In 2026, Settembre Colognese is scheduled to take place from 2 September to 8 September. The 131st agricultural, craft, trade and leisure fair will be held over a concentrated period from 4 September to 6 September 2026.

The 2026 Settembre Colognese programme includes the historical reenactment “VENETKENS – VENETI ANTICHI”, with workshops on weaving, archery, writing and pottery. A food area serving typical local dishes is also planned for Piazza Duomo. The Festa del Mandorlato is scheduled for 8 December as the final event of the year.
