Brognoligo-Costalunga: Sacred History, Wine and Trails

Brognoligo-Costalunga brings together sacred history, winemaking, and trails through the hills of Soave Classico within a small area. If you are choosing accommodation for an independent trip to Italy, its appeal lies less in a single highlight than in the combination of several distinctive local features: Brognoligo with its Lourdes grotto, churches, and wine-growing area; Costalunga with its neoclassical parish church; and two trails between the districts.

Brognoligo and its sacred sites

The Grotta di Lourdes in Brognoligo is a replica of the Lourdes grotto featuring a statue of the Madonna. It was inaugurated in September 1948, after construction work had resumed in March of the same year. The grotto includes a copy of the Lourdes statue of Bernadette made of Carrara marble and a figure of Fra Claudio. This creates a religiously significant ensemble whose individual elements establish a specific connection with the history of the grotto.

The parish church of Santo Stefano is also part of Brognoligo's architectural history. The present parish church was built in 1841 after its predecessor had proved completely inadequate. The oldest sacred building documented in Brognoligo was a church dedicated to Santo Stefano Protomartire, recorded since 1262. In Costalunga, by contrast, the parish church was built between 1826 and 1830 in the neoclassical style and consecrated on October 22, 1835.

Winemaking and local traditions

Le Battistelle is located in Brognoligo in the Soave Classico growing area. The vineyard covers 14 hectares and lies on the hills of Soave Classico, whose soils are volcanic in origin. Another distinctive feature of the local wine culture is Vin Santo, which is produced exclusively in Brognoligo. Brognoligo's square also hosts the Sagra delle Ciliegie, del Recioto e del Vin Santo, an event that has been held for more than 60 years. Wine, traditional products, and the square as a venue thus form a distinct part of the area's character.

Panoramic trails between the districts

For active days, La Panoramica dei Colli connects Brognoligo and Costalunga. The route passes numerous viewpoints and is 16 kilometers long; it can also be ridden by mountain bike. The Sentiero delle Contrade Storiche likewise runs between Brognoligo and Costalunga and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. When planning your trip, you can therefore include both a scenic route and a trail with historical connections to the Contrade in your considerations, without limiting your stay to a single type of experience.

Villa Montanari – Durlo adds a historic building complex with a spacious courtyard and a well to the picture of Brognoligo. The complex was built between the 15th and 16th centuries and later altered. Together with the grotto, churches, winemaking, and trails, it creates a destination that combines cultural discoveries, regional wine themes, and movement through the hilly landscape.
