Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo among Fossils, Caves and Mountain Landscapes

Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo is a destination for you if you would like to combine geological formations, early history and trails in a mountain landscape. Fossils and Traces of Early Settlements

The Museo Paleontologico e Preistorico preserves numerous fossils of marine animals embedded in Pietra della Lessinia. These are complemented by prehistoric finds from the Lessini Mountains, including materials from Iron Age and Bronze Age settlements in the Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo area. Particularly striking is a fossil of a marine animal from the Upper Cretaceous, more than 5 metres long, which has been identified as a shark.

The Le Guaite archaeological site also takes visitors into the Middle and Late Bronze Age. Remains of fortification walls built to protect a hilltop settlement have been preserved there. The caves around Ponte di Veja also preserve evidence of human use during the Lower, Middle and Upper Palaeolithic, including flint tools. This makes it possible to explore the early history of the landscape across several periods.

Natural Arch and Caving

Ponte di Veja is a natural arch on the edge of the municipality of Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo. Its span is approximately 40 metres; its minimum thickness is 9 metres and its width is 20 metres. With an explored depth of 877 metres, Spluga della Preta is one of the deepest caves in Italy, while also playing an important role in the history of caving. Access to its interior is permitted only to experienced cavers with prior authorisation.

Forts, Castles and Mountains in the Surrounding Area

Forte Monte Tesoro was built between 1905 and 1911 in the Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo area. The surrounding area also includes Castello di Avio, a castle, and Falesia Mitria, a ruin site. In the wider regional area, Castello Scaligero and Castle Saint Pietro are also castles that can be connected with the historical side of the region.

The landscape is complemented by several mountains and peaks: Corno d'Aquilio is in the nearby area, while Monte Corno and Monte Tomba are in the area around Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo. Parco delle Cascate, a waterfall in the nearby area, adds another natural destination to the selection.

Trails and Time in the Greenery

Bosco Allegro is an equipped green area in Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo with covered barbecue areas, themed forest trails and an equipped children's area. This gives the town a practical starting point for planning a trip in which nature and time outdoors, including with children, play a role. The moderate circular trail Giro ad anello del Monte Tesoro near Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.
