Sorgà: Rice Fields, Country Estates and Frescoes

Sorgà combines a distinctive rice-growing landscape with country estates, frescoes, historic buildings and regional cuisine. Rice Landscape Along the Strada del Riso

The Strada del Riso crosses the entire area of Sorgà from north to south. It runs through country roads, rivers and rice fields rich in herons. In the Sorgà area, the rice fields cover approximately one thousand Veronese fields. As a result, rice culture appears not only as a culinary theme but also as a defining element of the landscape. Country Estates, Frescoes and Stories from the Past

One of the notable historic sites is Corte Bugna detta Belvedere. It was probably built in the second half of the 15th century. The Corte contains 16th-century frescoes attributed to Giulio Romano. One room is called the “Stanza di Cesare” and features illusionistic painted architecture. Architecture enthusiasts can therefore connect several different layers here: the construction period of the estate, its artistic decoration and the impact of a room whose design makes use of painted architecture.

The “Palazzon del Diavolo” was built in Sorgà in the second half of the 16th century based on designs by Giulio Romano. It is associated with legends about the devil, ghosts and the “pozzo rasador”. Corte Italia offers a different impression: it is a typical country estate with a manor house, stables, arcades and workers’ houses arranged in a row. Corte Grimani, too, preserves the originality and elegance of its 17th-century forms. Together, these places show different expressions of rural architecture without having to be reduced to a single historical period.

The Chiesa di Pampuro was built in the 15th century and preserves fragments of frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries. At the Casa Natale di Antonio Ascari, a building was completely restored after standing vacant for many years. A plaque at the entrance to “Ca' Ascarì” commemorates Antonio Ascari’s birthplace. These places complement the architectural perspective with religious art and a specific biographical memory.

Rice, Regional Cuisine and Wine

Sorgà lies within the designated production area of Riso Nano Vialone Veronese (PGI). The Vialone Nano Veronese rice tradition dates back 500 years. At the Casa del Vino in Sorgà, local dishes such as Trippa alla parmigiana, Baccalà and donkey ragout with Amarone are served, along with local cured meats and wines also available by the glass. This creates a direct connection between landscape, produce and cuisine for your travel planning: rice shapes the area, while the regional gastronomy incorporates other local specialties.

Practical Information for Your Visit

The Mulino e Pila di Pontepossero has been documented since the 14th century, cannot be visited and is located directly on the River Tione. This information is important for planning, because the historic value of the site cannot be equated with the possibility of visiting it. Since 2012, the Biblioteca Civica “Lara Toso” has made four free internet workstations available on request to registered users. Also since 2012, the library has organized the UTLEP, a series of cultural and educational events open to everyone. The events take place every Saturday at 3:30 p.m., except on public holidays, in the Sala Civica di Bonferraro.
