Brogliano between churches, the Agno Valley and Monte Bregonza

For a shorter outing, consider climbing Monte Bregonza. It is considered a short walk; the historic centre of Brogliano is recommended as the starting point. Churches and traces of local history

The present-day Pieve di San Martino dates from the 12th century and is essentially Romanesque in style. It continues to serve as a cemetery chapel. The historic centre is also home to the 15th-century church of Santa Maria Assunta, which is closed for worship. Another historic church is San Lorenzo di Quargnenta, which has been a parish church since the 14th century.

A settlement of Roman or pre-Roman origin once stood along the banks of the Agno. The remains of an original parish church were uncovered there. Later, the gravestone of the decemvir and aedile Lucio Meio Cessesio and his wife was discovered in this area. These finds lend historical depth to the riverside landscape, without implying that there is an excavation site accessible today.

Brogliano’s economic history also extends beyond its religious buildings. Silk farming was practised here in past centuries, and a small silk mill operated until the beginning of the 20th century. The former industry is therefore part of the town’s recorded history, not a statement about current production.

An event from the calendar

On Sunday, 10 May 2026, the Pro Loco di Brogliano invited residents and visitors to the new edition of the “Caminada tra sentieri e boschi de Brojan”. At this event, participants could explore the municipal area between lush valleys and volcanic hills. For planning purposes, the date should be understood as a specific historical event date.
