Castelgomberto: History, Trails and Local Character

Castelgomberto brings together archaeological traces, historic villas, trails through a landscape shaped by springs and local festivities centered on food. Archaeological Traces and the Castle of Chiuse

Archaeological excavations on Colle di S. Stefano have documented a settlement from the Middle to Late Bronze Age, dating from the 15th to the 12th century BC. Archaeological excavations on Monte Castello have also documented an Early Iron Age settlement from the 9th century BC. The Castle of Chiuse has been documented since around the year 1000. Its remains include substantial sections of wall and several architectural elements on Monte Castello.

Villas from the Middle Ages to Neoclassicism

Villa da Schio was completed in 1666 as Villa Piovene. It includes a chapel dating from 1296. The villa is surrounded by an 18th-century park with broad avenues lined by centuries-old trees and extensive green spaces. Palazzo Barbaran is the former Villa dei Trissino: a grand private building constructed around the mid-15th century in Gothic forms. Villa Trissino in Castelgomberto is a Neoclassical aristocratic villa.

Trails for Active Exploration

The Camminata di Primavera is a 12.5-kilometre route with 420 metres of elevation gain and an estimated duration of 3 hours and 45 minutes. The Giro Poscole-Praderia circular trail passes through the Poscole area, known for its springs. The two routes have different focuses: the Camminata combines a specific distance with a significant ascent, while the circular trail places the Poscole and its springs at the centre of the experience.

Fiera di Santa Maria Maddalena

The Fiera di Santa Maria Maddalena was first held in 1796 and has long been known as “la fiera del pao”. In the evenings, the event features food stalls, music and entertainment. Tripe is its traditional signature dish. Alongside its buildings and trails, Castelgomberto is therefore also defined by a local food and festival tradition.
