Discover Costabissara: History, Nature and Cycling

Costabissara offers various ways to experience history, nature and active leisure. Archaeological evidence, religious buildings, historic estates, an extensive park, an ecologically valuable wetland and cycling opportunities combine to create a multifaceted picture of the town.

Archaeology at the Town Hall

Costabissara Town Hall houses a permanent archaeological exhibition. It presents finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages, the Early Middle Ages and the modern era. These include finds from the excavation at Via Mascagni, as well as an important bronze statuette of the Egyptian god Anubis. This gives you an accessible introduction to different historical periods without limiting the exhibition to a single era.

Churches with a Distinctive Character

The Chiesa longobarda di San Giorgio was built during the Lombard period and served as the parish church of Costabissara until 1920. Its west-facing façade, east-facing apse and pointed-arch style define the building.

The Chiesetta di San Zeno was restored between 2009 and 2011. Missing sections of wall and the roof were reconstructed, a fresco was restored and electric lighting was installed. The building consists of a single rectangular nave measuring 12.80 metres in length and 5.10 metres in width. These clear dimensions also make the small church easy to understand architecturally.

Castello and Villa San Carlo

Castello Sforza Colleoni was rebuilt in 1285 after its destruction by Ezzelino III in 1241. The park of the Castello contains the Oratorio di Sant'Antonio, a small church with frescoes by Gino Raselli from Asolo on its walls. Castello Sforza Colleoni is a private residence.

Villa San Carlo includes a park covering 60,000 square metres, of which 3,400 square metres are occupied by the lake. Around two kilometres of walls surround the estate. The villa has been owned by the Counts Bissari since 1285.

Wetland and Cycling Tracks

Oasi delle Risorgive is an ecologically valuable wetland with numerous watercourses and springs. Water from the sports lake rises spontaneously from the groundwater. The Oasi is home to waterfowl, birds of prey, woodpeckers and wild orchids – a tangible natural feature for anyone who wishes to observe the landscape and wildlife attentively.

Good Wheel's cycling facilities include a Skills Track and a BMX Track. The Skills Track improves coordination and balance while cycling with the help of artificial obstacles that replicate roots, tree trunks and steps. The BMX Track is an approximately 200-metre-long, fully asphalted circuit with jumps, bumps and banked turns.
