Pianezze between the Cherry Route and Cultural Heritage

Pianezze lies at the foothills of the Asiago Plateau. The municipal area extends partly across hilly terrain and partly across flat land. This combination of different landscape forms characterizes the town just as much as its churches, oratories and historic buildings. For you, this creates a destination where cultural discoveries can be combined with routes through surroundings shaped by cherry trees, vineyards and olive groves.

Churches, Oratories and Villas

The parish church of San Lorenzo was completely rebuilt between 1753 and 1754. Inside is a fresco cycle by the painter Giuseppe Graziani (1699–1760), who came from Padua. The church of San Nicolò was restored in 1981 by the Alpini association of Pianezze. A fresco by an unknown artist is considered a depiction of the Madonna and Child; it may show the House of Nazareth or the church of San Nicolò. Below them appear Saints Nicholas and Oswald.

The Oratorio dei SS. Filippo e Giacomo was first mentioned in 1262. It preserves a fresco fragment of the Virgin and Child dating from the second half of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th century. The Oratorio di San Leonardo also contains an oil painting by an unknown artist from around 1700 depicting Saint Leonard. The different periods and forms make these religious buildings tangible points of interest for anyone interested in the development of local art and architecture.

The secular buildings also tell of earlier architectural forms. Villa Maroso is a square 16th-century building. On the piano nobile, columns have been preserved that once supported the architrave of a loggia that was later closed. In the courtyard, the villa retains an original well with a brick-built terracotta surround and original hydraulic-mechanical mechanisms. Casa Rigo has a central tower structure that formerly served as a dovecote, two side wings and a cornice decorated with terracotta.

Cherry Landscapes and Local Products

Pianezze is a stop along the “Strada della Ciliegia.” Along the Cherry Route, the gentle hills become a natural spectacle during the cherry blossom season in April. From mid-May onward, cherries are presented in Pianezze at numerous stalls along the roads and at traditional festivals. IGP cherries, grapevines and olives are cultivated as highly specialized crops. The name of the Colceresa Itinerary honors the typical local product, the cherry. Here, the fruit therefore appears not only as a seasonal product, but also as a recurring motif in the landscape and along the routes.

Walking the Sentiero dei Ciliegi

The Sentiero dei Ciliegi leads from Pianezze to Marostica and can then be followed back to Pianezze. Along its route, the path leads from the northern end of Contrada Malossi through a coppice woodland. Along the way, you may be accompanied by the sound of the stream below. The route described thus connects Pianezze with a path through a wooded landscape and a destination outside the town.

A project to create an educational trail along Pianezze’s old paths was developed in 1996. The initiative made it possible to restore old connecting paths. This historical development is part of the local history of the routes, without implying anything about the current usability of each individual path. Together with the Sentiero dei Ciliegi, it creates a clear thematic focus for stays in which landscapes, regional products and historic places stand side by side.
