Ponte Di Barbarano: History and Cheese Culture

Ponte di Barbarano is home to the Chiesa del Sacro Cuore di Gesù, Villa Sangiantofetti-Pedrina-Rigon, Villa Bogoni, Villa Meggiolaro, an annually displayed mechanical nativity scene and the Caseificio Sociale with its regional cheese-making tradition.

Church and Villa Architecture

The Chiesa del Sacro Cuore di Gesù was built from 1923 to 1926 in the Neo-Romanesque style. In 1942, it became the seat of a newly founded parish.

Villa Sangiantofetti-Pedrina-Rigon was created in the 17th century by converting and extending a manor house owned by the Traverso family. The complex includes the manor house, the garden, the barchessa, the dovecote and an oratory dedicated to the Redeemer. The oratory dedicated to the Redeemer was built between 1665 and 1685 by the Venetian nobleman Francesco Molin. Villa Bogoni, built in the second half of the 18th century, is also located in Ponte di Barbarano. Villa Meggiolaro is situated on the Riviera Berica near Villa Bogoni in Ponte di Barbarano and dates from the mid-17th century. The building history thus spans from the 17th-century villas to the 20th-century Neo-Romanesque church.

Nativity Scene and Regional Cheese Tradition

The mechanical nativity scene in Ponte di Barbarano is displayed every year from December 25 to the first Sunday in February. This fixed period between Christmas and the first Sunday in February is relevant for travel planning.

Since 1922, Caseificio Sociale Ponte di Barbarano has been affiliated with the Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Grana Padano DOP. In its associated factory shop, the Caseificio sells Grana Padano directly, aged for 24 or 30 months. The two aging periods distinguish the varieties of Grana Padano sold in the factory shop. The Caseificio Aperto event takes place on the last Sunday in October and includes tastings of cheese and typical local products. For travel planning, the last Sunday in October is the specific date for Caseificio Aperto and the tastings. Anyone wishing to include both the nativity scene and Caseificio Aperto should plan for different seasonal time windows.
