Caramanico Terme combines a historically shaped townscape with experiences in nature, spiritual sites and challenging hiking trails. The historic centre is characterised by narrow lanes and old houses. A notable entrance is the Porta delle Nasse, an ancient gateway to the historic centre. The former Convento delle Clarisse is also part of the town’s historical heritage: it is a fortified monastery dating from 1636.

History, churches and special trails

Several religious and historical sites can be linked together around Caramanico Terme. The Romanesque Abbazia di San Tommaso Becket was begun in 1202 together with the adjoining monastery and remained unfinished. On its central portal, the abbey preserves a high relief of Christ blessing with the twelve Apostles. The three-aisled interior contains frescoes from the 13th century.

Another route leads to the Eremo di San Bartolomeo in Legio. It reaches a hermitage where Pietro da Morrone, the later Celestine V, lived for several years with a few companions. In Caramanico Terme, the singing of Sant’Antonio is also still practised today. During this tradition, the local group and the group from the hamlet of Scagnano depict the temptations of the patron saint of animals in the town squares and those of the hamlets.

If you would like to combine historical sites with a short hike, a short path leads from the Church of Madonna del Castello to the summit of Colle Civita. At an altitude of 1,100 metres, Colle Civita has a viewpoint above Caramanico Terme and the Valle dell’Orta, with views of the Morrone.

Valle dell’Orfento and hiking

The Valle dell’Orfento nature reserve was established in 1971 and lies entirely within the municipality of Caramanico Terme. This makes the landscape one of the central nature-related attractions for a stay in the town. For a more extensive tour, the Anello del Ponte della Pietra e Valle di Sant’Onofrio circular trail is available. It is classified as difficult, is 18.5 kilometres long, takes around six hours and has an elevation gain of 940 metres. The different dimensions of the short path and the long circular trail help you plan your day according to your own interests and the distance you wish to walk.

A centre in Caramanico Terme provides tourist information about the town and the Valle dell’Orfento. Excursions, guided tours and environmental education workshops are organised there. The centre also rents out backpacks and child carriers. This gives you specific points of contact for nature and cultural activities, without having to combine the offerings into a single visit programme.

Museum and accessibility-related services

The archaeological section of the Museo naturalistico e archeologico Paolo Barrasso displays Italic and Roman finds discovered in the Parco della Maiella. The museum is also accessible to visitors with reduced mobility and offers activities for blind people. In addition to its historical content, a museum visit therefore accommodates different needs regarding orientation and access to the exhibitions.

Thermal centre and getting there

The thermal centre of Caramanico has a large inhalation department for the treatment of respiratory diseases, which is also suitable for treating children. There is also a mud therapy department offering treatments based on thermal mud for osteoarticular and rheumatic pain, as well as other musculoskeletal complaints. The thermal centre is temporarily closed. This status is crucial when planning a stay focused on wellness and treatments.

Travel to Caramanico Terme by train is via the Rome–Pescara line to Scafa station. A connecting public transport service to Caramanico Terme is available from the station forecourt in Scafa. When choosing your hotel, you can therefore take your preferred mode of travel into account alongside nature, history and hiking.
