The church has been documented since 1080, suggesting an early medieval foundation. It was originally dedicated to San Salvatore; in 1284 it was referred to as Ecclesia Sanctae Mariae. The wooden statue of the Beata Vergine Lauretana is still preserved in the centre of the apse today. Several historical layers thus remain connected in a single sacred place.
