Pietranico – History, Wine Tradition and Valley Views
Pietranico Between History and Valley Views
Pietranico lies at an altitude of 590 metres on the highest of the hills in the upper Pescara Valley. From the Muraglione outside the eastern walls of the historic centre, the view extends across the entire Pescara Valley towards Città Sant’Angelo, Chieti, Pescara and the sea along the coast.
The Medieval Historic Centre
La Pietra di Castello is a preserved rocky spur at the highest point of the medieval historic centre, which is surrounded by walls, and one of the two remaining rocky spurs on which the ancient castle of Petraniqua was built. Porta della Terra is considered the only likely surviving gateway to the historic centre, with its narrow, winding lanes.
Churches and Chapels
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Michele Arcangelo is a Romanesque parish church built in 1934 on the site of, and over the remains of, a medieval church demolished in 1932. Its interior has a basilica-style Latin-cross layout with three naves, a short transept and a semicircular apse. The Chiesa di San Rocco is a Neoclassical church; it was built between 31 May 1860 and 21 June 1873 on the site of, and over the remains of, an earlier chapel dedicated to Saint Roch.
The Oratorio Madonna della Croce is a Baroque chapel in Tre Croci, approximately 2 km below Pietranico’s town centre. It was built between 1613 and 1656 following a Marian apparition witnessed by the shepherd Domenico Del Biondo. Entry is permitted with the prior authorisation of the mayor. The Oratorio di Santa Maria della Croce is considered a masterpiece of 17th-century Baroque art and a building of outstanding national historical and artistic interest.
Processions and Historic Routes
The celebrations of Madonna della Croce in Pietranico include hundreds of bonfires along the procession route on 2 May. The following day, the statue of the Madonna is carried to the oratory, commemorating the apparition witnessed by Domenico Del Biondo on 25 March 1613. Historically, the Oratorio di Santa Maria della Croce stood beside a branch of the Tratturo Magno L’Aquila–Foggia. This came from Alanno, reached Pietranico’s south-eastern ridge and rejoined the main route at S. Antonio.
Palmenti and Wine Heritage
The palmenti of Pietranico consist of an upper basin, where grapes were crushed and the pomace fermented, and a lower basin, where the must flowing through an opening was collected. They lie along a route regarded as a kind of ideal wine road. The local vineyards of Pietranico are associated with the nearby Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria in terms of their quality orientation. Pietranico and Terre di Casauria lie between Gran Sasso National Park and Maiella National Park.
