Catignano between History and Landscape

The Neolithic archaeological site of Catignano is located near the village of the same name and is considered one of the most important prehistoric settlements in Abruzzo. Prehistoric Traces and Archaeological Context

The culture associated with the archaeological site of Catignano dates from the period between 5400 and 4900 BC. The Catignano-Ponte Rosso site is located in the Sterpara district, at the confluence of the Nora River and the Fosso dei Cappuccini.

Palaces, Fortifications and Religious Buildings

Palazzo Palmieri Ricci has a concave façade with pilasters and half-columns made of red brickwork, typical of the Baroque style. Baroque design and older traces of fortification are directly connected here in architectural terms.

Remains of the embankment walls and the typical circular settlement layout of the fortified town survive from the medieval Castrum of Catignano. The form of the castrum makes the historic site comprehensible not only through individual wall remnants but also through its spatial organization.

The Church of San Giovanni Battista was renovated inside in 1795. The Convento di Santa Irene e della Natività was founded in the 16th century.

Former Monastery and Landscape Views

The former Ex Convento di Sant’Antonio is located in a scenic position and overlooks the surrounding landscape. Today, remains of the former convent survive, bearing witness to its original layout.

Catignano’s network of nature trails is suitable for walking. The paths lead through landscapes of gentle hills, forests, vineyards and olive groves.
